About Benjamin
My name is Ben Beaver. I have a B.S. in Physics from UTK. I have 3 years of college tutoring experience as well as experience being a TA for two physics courses. I also have been a substitute teacher for the local public school system since my graduation in December of 2024. At UTK I grew a community of students that would regularly seek out my assistance in their physics and math courses. My biggest strength is my ability to connect to each student and present the material in a way that they can understand. I guarantee I can not only help with assignments but increase your understanding of math and physics!

My first step with any student is to get to know them and why they have come to me for help. Next, I work with the student to establish goals. My tutoring method changes to fit the need of the student but they are often full of demonstrations and examples to ensure the student not only can complete assignments correctly but understand the concept they are applying. I believe I am a good tutor because I can motivate students to enjoy the material. My favorite moment is when you see it click for the student, and they get excited about the topic. I live for those moments. Given an hour window a sample lesson for a repeat student could look like this: 1. Quick review over past material and intro casual conversation to gauge how they are feeling today. Here I look at any assignments the student wishes to work on. (5 mins) 2. Questioning. I ask them questions about the topic and assignment to establish their level of understanding and to get them thinking. (15 mins) 3. Explanation. I take their responses and internally identify the weak points in their understanding. Here I might give an example that demonstrates concepts they misunderstood or did not know about. (10-15 mins) 4. Return to the material. Work on the assignment or example problems. Whenever the student struggles, I will ask leading questions that bring them to the correct conclusions "On their own". This empowers the student by putting the problem in their hands cut up into smaller easier pieces. It brings a greater appreciation of the material than simply providing an answer ever could. (20-25 mins) 5. Closing review. What did they learn, what do they still not understand? If more instruction is required direct them to other resources that can be helpful (YouTube video, practice problems etc.). (5 mins)
