Students play a repertoire of four different periods: baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century / contemporary. The characteristics of each period will be explained to the students. Students need to know the difference between the characteristics in order to correctly perform the song. Tone and technique: I use a technique that involves the upper body and movement of the arms. The key is to understand the connection between the fingers and the upper body. The weight is controlled to create a dynamic range (from dpi to fff) with a good quality of tone thus avoiding a harsh and aggressive sound. There must be a clear difference between the "legato", "non-legato" and "staccatto" keys. For example, to create a correct "legato" sound, an arm movement on the keyboard towards the passage is necessary. Weight must be transferred from one finger to another. Non-legato and staccatto must be different from each other and involve the use of body weight, wrist and arm movements. It is demonstrated in the studio Reading: Besides reading the books that elementary students play, I use small cards to improve their reading. On one side of the card, a quarter of a note is displayed. I create games for young pupils of “elementary” level like coupling cards (notes) which are the same but have an octave below or above (for example, coupling the means “C” or “do” with a another "C" or "do" an octave above). Improvisation: "Elementary" students are encouraged to improvise on the piano. Cards are available on my piano with titles on each card such as "wind", "skating", etc ... At the start of each lesson, the student will start by choosing a card at random and improvise based on the title from the menu. Interpretation: Frequently Asked Questions One of the key aspects of learning is asking students to give their own interpretation of the song. These questions often provide the student with an overview of the performance of the song. So the interpretation comes from the student. For example, I teach the prelude in E minor from Chopin. When a student has learned the song with both hands, I start asking them the following questions: - What part of the song do you think should come out? Why ? - Which part of the song should be played more gently? Why ? - Should the chords be played detached or connected? Why ? - How do you connect the chords? Why ? - When should you use the pedal? - When should you change the pedal? These questions keep the student's mind active and help them interpret the song. Each question highlights an aspect of interpretation. Learn the song: Any good performance must first be conceptualized in the mind. It is only when the performer has total mastery of the piece that he can really play it in a new way. Each song must first be learned by playing with two hands and playing with one hand in order to give independence to the hands and avoid routine. Performers should always memorize the pieces in two separate hands and then together. Several practices are used in order to have a perfect understanding of music. Some of these practices aim to overcome physical obstacles inherent in the playing of certain songs and others in order to better understand a song. Examples are demonstrated in the studio. One of the important points of my method is to continually stimulate the attention of my students, to ensure that they are never passive.
