About Rara

I am a piano and cello teacher based in Hong Kong with extensive experience in both Western and Chinese orchestral settings. Having studied piano and cello from a young age, I have achieved performance-level proficiency in Hong Kong, equivalent to RCM Level 10 and above. I have been teaching piano for 7 years and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. My background in social work gives me valuable insight into communicating effectively with children, allowing me to create a supportive and engaging learning environment for my students. My teaching is driven by a passion for sharing music and helping students of all ages develop both their technical skills and love for music. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor Dual-Disciplinary Expertise: My extensive background in both piano and cello, along with my Chinese and Western orchestral experience, allows me to offer students a broader perspective on music and performance. I can help students understand how their instrument fits into an ensemble or larger orchestral context. Child Development Insight: Having a background in social work, particularly in communication with children, I bring an understanding of child psychology and emotional development. This helps me recognize and cater to a student’s emotional needs during their learning journey, making lessons a safe and engaging space for self-expression. Holistic Approach: I don’t just teach music – I also aim to nurture each student’s confidence, patience, and perseverance, which are vital qualities for any musician (and individual). I create a supportive environment where students are encouraged to take risks and grow both musically and personally. Cross-Cultural Understanding: Growing up in Hong Kong and being familiar with both Chinese and Western music traditions allows me to offer a rich, diverse perspective that is reflective of both cultures. This helps students appreciate and embrace musical traditions from all over the world.

As a tutor, my approach centers around building a strong, supportive relationship with each student, allowing me to tailor my teaching to their unique needs, goals, and learning style. I aim to foster an environment where students feel encouraged to explore their musical abilities, express themselves, and grow at their own pace. Here’s a breakdown of my approach:

Teaching Methodology and Techniques
Student-Centered Learning: I believe in personalizing lessons based on the student’s musical goals and interests. I take into account their strengths, weaknesses, and specific challenges, adjusting my teaching to suit their learning style (whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic).

Balanced Approach: I incorporate both technical skill-building and musical expression in lessons. For example, while focusing on technique (such as scales, sight-reading, and finger exercises), I also emphasize the emotional and expressive aspects of music. This helps students connect to the music and develop their own unique voice.

Positive Reinforcement: I use encouragement and praise to build confidence. Small achievements are celebrated, and mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, making the process enjoyable and less intimidating for students.

Progressive Learning: I introduce concepts progressively, ensuring students fully grasp each skill or theory before moving on to the next level. This approach fosters a sense of accomplishment and mastery, which motivates students to continue learning.

Incorporation of Various Styles and Techniques: Drawing on my experience with both Chinese and Western orchestra settings, I expose students to different genres and playing techniques. This broadens their musical understanding and appreciation, whether they’re playing solo or as part of an ensemble.

Who My Lessons Are For
Piano: From beginners to advanced students (RCM Level 10 or equivalent), including those interested in classical, pop, or contemporary styles.
Cello: Suitable for beginners to intermediate players, with a focus on developing solid technique and musicality. I also offer guidance for students who want to join or form ensembles, helping them develop ensemble skills.
Specific Needs: I tailor lessons for students with various goals, whether they are learning for personal enjoyment, performance exams, or pursuing higher-level music studies.
