About Ross

Ross heads up a small, handpicked team of creative and critical writers, editors, and private tutors. He is currently completing his practice-led creative writing PhD at York St John University, with a focus on short story cycles. Previously, he attended the University of Gloucestershire, and achieved his BA (Hons) in Creative Writing, for which he was awarded the Francis Close Hall Creative Writing Prize for the highest dissertation mark, and his MA in Creative and Critical Writing, for which he was awarded a postgraduate bursary from the UoG Annual Fund for Excellence, and the Tutors’ Prize for outstanding academic achievement, achieving the highest aggregate mark on the course. Ross continues to publish creative, critical, and academic work. He was the founder and editor-in-chief of Superlative – The Literary Journal, which published quality, innovative work by emerging short story writers, in order to promote new, developing authors and the art of the short story to readers worldwide. He is a professional member of the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), where he attends regular writing conferences and has access to the latest writing in education materials. He enjoys educating, guest lectures on creative writing courses at colleges and universities, and has numerous education and training qualifications.

Ross and his small team of handpicked tutors and editors offer worldwide academic tutoring from 11+, 13+, and GCSE English Language and Literature, up to essay writing at Postgraduate level or, outside of academia, for non-native English speakers, or those who simply have an avid interest in creative writing and editing. This includes students studying at institutions worldwide, or through open university. They also offer personal statement and cover letter editing services. They pride themselves on providing exceptional, individually tailored support, including matching you with the best suited tutor or editor for your needs; working as team, they review all students’ lessons and notes together to ensure the same quality and consistency, regardless of which tutor you are paired with. They deliver bespoke sessions, but writing and learning are iterative processes; their preferred teaching method is by way of workshops (one to one or group workshops) as they believe this is by far the best way to improve – it gets you writing and analysing your own work. Their aim is always, of course, to enable students to achieve their goals, but also to help make students aware of their own learning, allowing them to utilise and develop skills for lifelong use. They set writing development exercises, enabling students to produce a piece of writing before the workshop (roughly 500-1000 words), which they then edit and annotate. This allows the entirety of the workshop to be spent in analysis and improvement, rather than half of it being wasted reading. All sessions are via webcam, using either Microsoft Teams or Zoom. The option for feedback to be sent electronically is available. Depending on the level of study, the first session may need to be an assessment of the student's academic ability/tutoring requirements, or simply a workshop designed to build rapport and cover some fundamentals. Workshops last 45-60 minutes. Workshop cost includes 1 hour of editing outside of the workshop. Work to be provided for editing 2 days before the workshop. Minimum 24 hours' cancellation notice required. Refunds not available. If work, or 24 hours notice of cancellation, is not provided before a workshop, that session will be forfeited. By accepting tuition, students agree to these terms and conditions. The team are also happy to undertake writing and editing tasks of any nature. The hourly fee of £65 still applies, plus travel costs if applicable. Sometimes, for larger projects, a daily rate of £350 is more suitable.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been an aspiring writer since 2007, but only discovered how much I enjoyed editing and teaching in 2017, whilst studying Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire. It was during my studies that I decided to become a tutor, and aspire to eventually become a professor.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Prose and essay writing and editing are my specialities, and are what I spend most of my time doing - be that editing work for my students, content and ghost writing, editing submissions for Superlative, The Short Story Literary Journal, or writing and editing my own work. I am more content writing poetry than editing it, but have almost as much experience as I do with prose.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My undergraduate dissertation supervisor had such a vast knowledge of so many areas related to writing, editing and beyond - and a mental library so extensive I could never quite believe it - that I was inspired to expand my own knowledge and pass that experience on to others. Not only was he a superb academic, but he was incredibly patient and helpful, and I aspire to be equally as excellent a teacher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I would say 3 things: an acute understanding of what your students actually need to achieve their goals; the patience and skills to transfer that knowledge to them; and, finally, whilst qualifications are obviously important, extensive experience and expertise in the areas you teach make the best tutors stand out, and give the best teaching value for students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Up until the beginning of 2017, I was employed full time by a large retail company as a General Manager - a secure, well paid position that allowed me some spare time in which I could write. And I was so bored. Leaving that job to undertake higher education studies and pursue a career in writing, editing and teaching was one of the best things I've ever done.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest difficulties with writing is that it is always subjective. What I like, somebody else might not. Some of the most popular novels, short stories, anything, are sometimes also the most controversial. That isn't always a bad thing, but it is definitely a hurdle I've had to overcome when faced with criticism of my own work.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I want to keep writing alive for future generations: it's a difficult skill that takes many years to develop, and that nobody will ever perfect. I try to help do this by producing my own work, providing a platform for others to have work published, and, of course, by passing on knowledge to my students.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Aside from everything highlighted in these interview questions and on my profile, I am available to my students whenever they need me for guidance, and am always happy to go further to provide help.
