About Jonny
For the last 8 years I've performed in a broad range of projects across Scotland. Whilst studying Music (BA (hons), Masters, and PhD), I've been tutoring in the central belt for the last 4 years, primarily in Edinburgh and Leith.
Actively working as a band leader means that I also have a lot of experience in the composition of original music and the creation of project-specific arrangements. This means that I can help you develop a broad, creative, and applied understanding of music theory; in addition to practical musicianship and performance technique.
Helping people develop their abilities, and understanding what music means to them brings me a lot of joy as well as motivation into my own practice.

From my own experience, working out how best to harness the enjoyment and motivation of each student has been central to understanding what teaching practice and style will work best. Everyone is different - I believe in delivering inclusive and accessible practices so that everyone can have an equal chance to learn and develop.
Over the years, I've taught a diverse selection of students with differing requirements. Ages have ranged between 5 years old to 80+, some with neurodiversity or disability.
When deciding upon the duration and frequency that would best suit, it's most important to consider age and attention span. Typically for younger students I would suggest weekly 30-minute sessions, with the opportunity to move to hour lessons when desired. However, for later teens and older students, hour lessons may be more desirable from the start. In both cases, the key to making progress is to commit to a frequency that can be maintained, and I can help you work out what this is for you!

I have performed with Jonny for a number of years now. He’s a great bassist and guitarist and is extremely professional and friendly. He would make any lesson environment fun and relaxing and has a vast amount of knowledge to pass on. Would highly recommend!
Jonny is a fantastic bassist, guitarist and all round musicians. I have learned so much from him and would recommend him to anyone! AND he’s a lovely human.
I cannot recommend Jonny highly enough. As a student, I’ve found his ability to adapt every lesson to my specific goals and pace to be invaluable. He is incredibly creative, often coming up with unique ways to explain complex techniques that make them easy to grasp. Beyond his talent as a guitarist, he is exceptionally reliable and kind, creating a supportive environment where I feel comfortable making mistakes and growing. If you’re looking for a tutor who actually listens and tailors their approach to you, look no further!
Learning guitar can be intimidating, but Jonny makes it feel seamless. He is a very talented musician, but more importantly, he is a kind and reliable mentor. I love how creative he gets with our lessons—he never uses a 'one-size-fits-all' approach and always adapts to my needs and interests. I’ve seen so much progress since starting with him. Five stars isn't enough!
Couldn't ask for a better teacher - Jonny can do anything & everything! He's an insane performer too and has the best chat, you'll love any lesson you have with him!
