About Richard
I am a fully-qualified teacher registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland. I have been teaching the Irish language for 15+ years to all levels for the Leaving Certificate. I have a deep love and respect for our beautiful and majestic language: the oldest codified language in Western Europe.
I have taught people of Irish descent and also people from outside Ireland, who all successfully achieved their goals. I find it very satisfying to help students gain confidence and achieve their goals. There is nothing like it.
I am also a published author of historical content, including two books. I enjoy all kinds of music, cooking, travel, and films.

I have taught Irish to all levels of ability and for all leaving cert state exams. I successfully prepared aspiring primary school teachers to tackle leaving cert higher-level Irish within a single academic year with just two hours a week.
I have a very direct and practical approach. When it comes to speaking practice and oral exam tasks, we hash out the target vocabulary and we repeat and perfect what we want to say until the student is comfortable.
I favour a scaffolding methodology to writing practice, where a student has access to mind maps or vocab lists and answers exam questions under supervision, where the student is free to ask advice as often as they need. This builds confidence until, eventually, the student doesn't need much help and is writing top notch answers. Simple, satisfying, and very effective!
