About Aric

Los Angeles based Trumpet Player Aric Kline leads an active career as a versatile performer, and music educator.
Through his private studio, as well as the positions he holds with The Orchestra Place, and with Aimee Art Productions, Aric has spent the last 12 years fostering a sense of wonder and joy for all of the students he has the privilege of working with.
As a versatile and highly educated performer, Aric is able to draw upon a wide array of experiences to cater every lesson to the needs of his students, rather than a preordained curriculum.
Aric can be heard as Principal Trumpet of the San Gabriel Valley Symphony, Principal Trumpet of the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra, Second Trumpet in the Orchestra Collective of Orange County, Split Lead Trumpet in contemporary big band Sicnarf, as well as numerous indie film scores, such as the short film M.I.R, written and directed by Liam Sherman.
As a soloist he has commissioned several works for trumpet, including Double Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, written by David Hernandez. After this concerto’s premiere with the San Gabriel Valley Symphony in April, Aric looks forward to recording his first solo album, entitled No Genre Needed.
When he isn’t playing or teaching the trumpet, Aric can be found testing out new recipes, watching movies, going to concerts, exploring Los Angeles and playing card games with his friends.
To hear a few of Aric’s recent projects, check out the newly released Sicnarf Ep A Clever Bit, and keep your ears ready for Good Time Brass’ upcoming recording of A Cosmic Perspective.

One of the great joys of being a teacher is that every students is different! This allows me to draw upon the wide array of experiences I've had to meet my students where they're at, and to teach them as an individual, rather than insisting on a curriculum. Regardless of the student's level of experience or skill, my goal as a teacher is to help make trumpet as easy and fun as possible.

That being said, the work I do with those I teach almost always revolves around intonation, timing, efficiency, breathing, musicality, quality of sound, and most importantly, joy. No musical task is too large if all of these elements are being evaluated on a regular basis.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I developed a passion for music very early in my life! As the story goes, I was in the car with my dad when I was about 3. A jingle with a trumpet came on the radio and I was immediately obsessed with the sound I heard. Once I found out what a trumpet was I begged my parents for one for years. I didn’t get to start until I was 12. I haven’t looked back.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I am a sucker for anything from the 60’s-80’s. Outside of that, anything from the swing era, from Chet Baker, the romantic classical era, as well as Kamasi Washington and Hozier for modern day musicians.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult (and least common) course I could give to a student would be preparation for what life as a professional musician looks like. This would start by giving them the tools they need to successfully play the instrument, and would end with events like recitals, recording sessions, and a little bit of sitting in on some of my lessons themselves. I do not expect my students to pursue a career as an artist, but it is very important to me that they understand what that world looks and feels like should they choose to go down this path.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument is equally hard to master. Each instrument has its own strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the day, you need to find what instrument, or instruments call to you, and enjoy the ride!
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Value the process over the product.

Cherish every small victory you can make.

Lead your practice sessions with patience, curiosity, and gratitude that you get to be doing something as cool as making music!
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Astor Piazzolla, George Gershiwn, and Chet Baker.

Every single one of these musicians found an extremely distinct style/sound/and approach to their art form. I would love to pick their brains about what their journey to finding themselves through their art was like.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I was 18 I got terribly injured before starting my undergraduate at the Eastman School of Music. I had a seizure and fell down a staircase and slammed part of my lips against a metal bar.

I didn’t share this story with my undergraduate trumpet professor James Thompson out of fear of getting accepted into the school off of sympathy. When it came up in our first lesson he said that “Recovery is going to be hard. There is no way around that. You are going to be frustrated with me for wanting to take this slow as we need, and you’re going to be even more frustrated with yourself. That being said, if you trust me, and are patient and kind to yourself, you have a chance.”

That last sentence has become my entire teaching philosophy. The student teacher relationship is about trust, kindness, and patience.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

As someone with very little natural talent, who has recovered from an injury, I am great at diagnosing obstacles my students are experiencing, and know how to meet them wherever they are in their journey on the instrument. Like I said in the last question, trust, patience, and kindness are vital. I make a conscious effort to lead with these attributes.

Past this, I love doing it! I had incredible teachers growing up. It’s a privilege to be able to pass along what I’ve learned from them down to my own students.
