About Richard
My name is Richard Taylor and I teach harmonica professionally. You'll find me in schools, online, in workshops, at jam sessions and on stage. You'll also find me on your TV - check out the opening scene of BBC1's Only Child series, Episode 1 (BBC iPlayer). My enjoyment comes from helping others achieve their musical goals on the harmonica. I am Editor of the Harp Surgery website, coaching adults one-to-one. I also produce Harpin' By The Sea, the UK's leading international harmonica festival. And during the day I am Director of Harp Academy, teaching harmonica in Primary Schools, where I have coached several junior champions.

Your musical journey begins with a free taster session during which we ensure you are relaxed and having fun. We will check your level of ability, establish your learning goals and agree a pathway for you to achieve these. Lesson content combines practical exercises and pieces drawn from many years of experience teaching harmonica professionally in workshops, online and in school settings. We will also establish whether you wish to include any music theory. An ability to read music is not essential but can be coached if required. Harmonica tabs are used.
Recommendations

I know Richard from Brighton's thriving Blues community where he is a well respected and valued member as both a player and event organiser. Working with Richard as my mentor this year has been terrific as he has been both insightful and supportive in my musical journey; i have benefitted from both his tutelage and experience as a working musician. It's been an honour to observe him teaching beginner harmonicists and be challenged myself with advanced techniques and exercises. Overall it's Richard's manner and personable humour that sets him apart as a tutor and I would thoroughly recommend him for any level of player to advance their proficiency with the Harmonica.
Probably the best harmonica teacher in the land!
He is patient, so knowledgeable in all genres of the instrument, witty and puts you at ease whether you’re young or old.
Richard a guiding light in my journey towards playing a harmonica and not just sucking and blowing it. I highly recommend his tutorial.
I have known Richard for many years and spent time with him in both profesional and social settings. Richard has developed a teaching method that encompaases not only his vast knowledge of his instrument but also his capacity to make everyone else around him find joy in learning. Richard's interpersonal skills are second to none displaying a warmth of understanding that is rare to find in anyone else. Attention to detail, deep knowledge of the subject and a will to make sure everyone understands and absorbs what is going on are just a few of Richard's many skills. I wish that he had been my harmonica teacher from the start of my journey.
Richard is an exemplary music instructor. He appears to have perfect pitch and gets the balance between theory and application right. I met him initially through his event, Harpin' by the Sea, which is arguably the UK's most notable blues harmonica event. I've enjoyed every lesson with Richard
