About Tom
My name is Tom and I am an experienced teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience both in the United Kingdom and internationally. I am a skilled KS2 practitioner with experience teaching in years 3, 4, 5 and 6. I am qualified to teach English as a foreign language. I have worked for the British Council in Hong Kong, teaching English to both children and adults and I have taught English to Chinese undergraduate students at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. I am currently working as an intervention teacher at the Merton School in Syston, working with specific children in Year 5. I am proficient in teaching all subjects across the primary curriculum. However, with my in-depth knowledge of the English language and its respective grammar, I am particularly passionate about supporting children's understanding of it. Furthermore, I know how to assist children of all abilities, supporting them to reach their potential while building their confidence. I make learning enjoyable and memorable for all.

Once I have made my initial assessments, I tailor sessions that address gaps in learning. Each session meets the needs of my student to assure they gain true understanding. Although I have clear aims for my sessions, there is an element of fluidity for each lesson being that my teaching always reacts to my student's needs. I prefer not to rush forward if I feel further practice or consolidation is needed. This, in my mind, is effective teaching.
I make sure that my sessions are interactive and engaging. I like my student to have opportunities to do and to make their own learning discoveries as I guide them through the session. I endeavour to make my sessions fun for my students as I want them to take great enjoyment from the learning process. I am a big believer in giving my students recognition for small steps to build their confidence.
