About George

I am a qualified teacher with ten years' classroom experience and a four-year integrated Master's degree in Chemistry (MSci) from Imperial College London, where I graduated with First Class Honours.

For the past four years I have taught Chemistry at a leading independent boys' school, and before that spent two and a half years at an independent girls' school. I hold both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and taught across a range of state schools while training. Alongside my main degree I also studied Physics and Mathematics, so I am comfortable supporting students where the three subjects overlap.

I am also the author of two published GCSE Chemistry revision guides, "Improve Your Chemistry Grade", one for AQA GCSE and one for Edexcel IGCSE, and I have developed two companion revision apps on the App Store covering the same specifications. Both came directly out of the classroom — the points students reliably get stuck on, and the exam technique that moves grades — and my students work from the same material and the same approach in their lessons.

My aim is to help students reach their ambitions and their true potential. I encourage them to develop intellectual curiosity beyond the confines of the syllabus, and to strive for excellence in whichever field they choose to pursue. I also believe in a balanced approach, in which academic study, physical health and proper time to consolidate learning can comfortably co-exist.

Who I work with

Most of my students are preparing for A Level or GCSE Chemistry, including Cambridge International A Level and IB. I also teach Maths and Biology up to GCSE and IGCSE, and work with younger students from Year 6 upwards who want to build confidence before the exam years begin.

How a lesson runs

Lessons are one hour on Zoom, using live annotation so we work through problems together on screen rather than me simply talking. I usually start by checking the previous week's homework, since that tells me quickly where the gaps are, then teach the new material and finish by applying it to real exam questions from the relevant board.

I teach all four A Level specifications — OCR A, OCR B (Salters), Edexcel and AQA — so lessons are built around the exact wording, mark schemes and examiner expectations of your child's board, not generic Chemistry. Ten years in the classroom means I know where each specification tends to catch students out.

My approach

I introduce new material by building on what a student already knows, so each concept connects to something familiar rather than arriving out of nowhere. Chemistry becomes very difficult when it is learnt as a series of disconnected rules, and much more manageable when students can see how the ideas fit together.

When a student is stuck on an exam question, I don't hand them the answer. I give a hint — enough to get their thinking moving, and no more — and let them arrive at it themselves. It takes a little longer in the lesson, but it is the difference between a student who can answer that question and one who can answer the questions they haven't seen yet. Over time it builds real problem-solving ability, which is what the higher-mark questions are designed to test.

I also encourage students to follow their curiosity beyond the confines of the syllabus, and I believe academic work, physical health and proper time to consolidate learning should sit alongside one another rather than compete.

Between lessons

Every student gets a shared Google Drive folder. It holds their resources, their homework, and a dated record of everything we cover in each lesson. Students can revisit any topic at any point, and parents can see exactly what has been taught and what has been set — without having to ask. I can work in OneNote instead if a student already prefers it.

Group lessons

I also teach small groups, which suits students working towards the same exam who benefit from discussing problems with each other.

I have been teaching online since 2020 and have found it every bit as effective as in person, with the added advantage that everything we do is saved and searchable.
