About Chris
Hi, I’m Chris, a qualified teacher based in New Zealand.
I have been teaching for over 10 years in Deaf Education, along with 15–20 years of experience teaching New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) in the community. This has included both group classes and one-on-one sessions, as well as delivering online lessons during COVID.
My teaching approach is student-led. I focus on what learners want to achieve, while also weaving in the essential foundations needed to build strong language skills, confidence, and deeper understanding over time.
I’m also a father of three, and my son is Deaf too, so NZSL is an important part of our everyday life—not just professionally, but personally as well.
Outside of work, I enjoy sports, LEGO, and gaming.

I use a visual, immersive, and culturally responsive approach to teaching NZSL. Lessons are designed to prioritize communication over perfection, using modeling, repetition, and real-life context.
My teaching includes:
• Visual scaffolding (gestures, images, demonstrations)
• Language-in-use rather than isolated vocabulary
• NZSL immersion (minimal reliance on spoken English where appropriate)
• Cultural integration, including Deaf perspectives, norms, and identity
• Interactive learning, such as role-play, storytelling, and conversational practice
Lessons are for anyone and everyone who wants to learn.
Lessons will be around 1 hour long per session with eyebreaks.
I've been a Deaf teacher of the Deaf working in Deaf classrooms for 10 years, and also teaching NCEA NZSL, and community NZSL classes.
