About Harriet

Hello, I'm Harriet, a TEFL qualified English (ESOL) Language teacher with over 20 years experience in education as a teacher and senior manager. I have taught in Colleges, Charities and online .
I am qualified to teach Business and General English and also Pronunciation. I have Masters degrees in both Psychology and Creative Writing which means I am skilled in both academic and expressive language.

I live in Hove in southeast England and also spend a lot of time in Lisbon, Portugal. I am currently learning Portuguese, which gives me a perspective on what its like to try to speak another language well !

I love meeting new people and finding out about them and what motivates them. I enjoy reading, drawing, eating out, drinking coffee, walking, exploring new places, and talking to people. I look forward to meeting you and taking our first lesson together.

Please note I do not currently teach on weekends and lessons are for older teenagers and adults.

About the lesson

The lessons will be based on what you want and need to learn . Each lesson starts with discussing what you want to learn and why. We will then agree a plan of fun and challenging activities for the lessons to help you meet your goals.

The lessons will be lively and varied, using a range of methods, materials and contexts. We will regularly review your progress and goals and I will suggest activities outside of class to help you practice what you have learnt.

I am qualified to teach General and Business English and am happy teaching both. I can provide targeted feedback on written work and interview practice if needed. I have also recently trained to teach Pronunciation and accent reduction and can do this as part of each class.

I am able to teach beginners to advanced level students. Lessons can be 30 minutes to 1.5 hours long and will take place on Google Meets or Skype. My working hours are 9am to 7pm UK/Portugal time Monday to Thursday and 9am to 5pm on Fridays.

The first 30 minute trial lesson is free.

Student reviews:

' I have had the opportunity to talk with gentle correction of my pronunciation (which I really want to improve so I asked for that) and I learnt SO MUCH new vocabulary today! And the lesson was absolutely enjoyable, I really liked it! Harriet was prepared as usual, tailored the programme and my homework for my personal needs... Thank you a lot, our lesson made my day. a great tutor.' Veronika

'I really enjoy every lesson with Harriet, She is very attentive and always corrects mistakes and takes necessary notes. Each lesson is very useful and positive.' Iryna

'Great teacher. Harriet is open to the student, agrees on their individual needs, and helps with professional matters related to the use of English. I recommend it with full responsibility.' Joanna

'Harriet is patient , dedicated , thorough and has supported us with great improvements in A levels English. I highly recommend her .thanks' Ololade

Harriet's kindly warmth and sense of humour belie a first-class mind and an organised, results-driven approach to teaching English. Harriet spent many years teaching behaviourally-challenged students, her patience, sensitivity and excellent teaching skills raising students' self-esteem and increasing their capacity to learn and retain knowledge.
Harriet's teaching style will enable you to realise your full learning potential but in a happy, stress-free atmosphere.
Needless to say, her own English is top drawer.
