About China

Hi, I’m China — a professional portrait and figure artist with over 15 years of experience.

I studied Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art and have since worked in galleries in Mayfair before building my own art business, ArtistAnd. Alongside teaching, I create commissioned artwork including portraits, figures, animals and architecture — so everything I teach comes from real experience as a working artist.

I specialise in pencil, watercolour, pastel and oil painting, but my main focus is helping students build strong drawing foundations that they can apply to any subject.

My teaching style is relaxed, friendly, and completely tailored to you. I believe everyone can learn to draw — it’s just about learning how to see.

My lessons are a safe, supportive space with no pressure or judgement, just encouragement (and a bit of chat while we work!).

I primarily teach online, making it easy to learn from home in a comfortable and flexible way. I've devised a great set up so it's as though we are in the same room.

About the lesson

Anyone can learn to draw — whether you're a complete beginner or just a bit rusty. We’ll start by identifying your strengths and areas to improve, then build a personalised plan to help you progress quickly and confidently.

What you’ll learn
To draw anything — from imagination or reference — you need to understand the fundamentals. We’ll cover:
* Shading & tone
* Materials & techniques
* Negative space
* Line direction
* Breaking subjects into simple shapes
* Perspective
* Measuring & proportions

Once you’re confident with these, we’ll apply them to more advanced subjects such as:
* Portraits
* Architecture
* Still life
* Botanicals
* Animals

How it works
Online lessons: My setup allows me to clearly see your work in real-time, so it feels just like I’m there with you.

Flexible times: Weekdays between 8am–6pm — perfect for before work or lunch breaks.

Homework (optional): I’ll send you lesson notes and exercises if you’d like to practise between sessions.

Materials needed
* 2B, 2H, 8B pencils
* Smooth paper (120–150gsm)
* Eraser
* Ruler
* A way to position your phone above your paper (holder or simple DIY setup)

If you have something specific in mind, we can tailor the lessons for the project too.

China is a wonderful teacher and has a brilliant knack of putting all her pupils at ease and brings out the best of them. She is incredibly knowledgable about techniques, very patient and encouraging. She makes every session different, with lots of fun exercises and creative ways of making drawing and painting so much fun as well as learning new skills. My own drawing and painting skills have come on leaps and bounds since not picking up a pencil or brush in 10 years so thank you China for reigniting my passion for both!

DETAILS This is the standard rate for pencil drawing classes for all levels. I don't work evening and weekends as I have other commitments and classes to teach. Classes are the same high standard virtually and physically. If you need to cancel, please do let me know 24 hours in advance. If you have paid and cancel after this time, you will not be eligible for a refund.

When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?
I have been selling artwork since the age of 23 but training and drawing for many years before that to become a realist portrait artist. I found my passion as a small child when I first discovered the shape of an eye was not a circle, but an almond shape. I ran home and asked my dad to show me how to draw objects and we went through some simple 3D drawings and I was hooked. 25 years later, I am still hooked to painting and drawing and learning.
Which artists or works affect you the most?
The artists that inspire me the most are the likes of Mitch Griffiths, Cuong Nugyen and the classics like Da Vinci and Rembrandt. These artists are incredibly powerful at storytelling through realism and depicting nature in an amazing way.
What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?
To be able to succeed in realistic art you need patients, perseverance and a yearning for learning as cliche as that sounds. You need to drop all expectations and allow yourself to fail before you get better. If you never fail, there will never be room for improvement. You need to learn to see in a different way in order to improve your own translation from the visual world onto the 2D surface.
What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?
Give yourself a break! Often I find students are so disappointed in themselves when they don't draw perfectly for the first time and when we try something new, they are frustrated that they haven't mastered it already. If you were that good already, you wouldn't be needing lessons. Be kind to yourself and celebrate the small wins.
How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?
My passion is creating a lifelike representation of whatever subject I am drawing. If I have captured the likeness and brought the character or object to life then I have done my job well. It makes me feel like I have achieved something each and every time and so if I can draw something everyday, I am then achieving everyday.
What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?
I am proud of working for several major brands with my painting skills. My best achievement was when I collaborated with Dominos to help the launch of the master pizza series. I painted the Mona Lisa eating pizza and it was a nationwide press event. Pretty cool.
Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?
Yes, I am often blown away by students' achievements and their dedication to a particular drawing. I always have low expectations with students so that we can work on perfecting the fundamentals and sometimes people speed through that stage really quickly! Other dont, but that's fine because we then we move on when the time is right :)
