About Elissa
My name is Elissa Huang. I have 18 years of experience playing the violin and the viola and have played extensively with chamber groups, orchestras, and as a soloist. I just graduated with a degree in Music Education from New York University where I studied with Gregory Fulkerson. This experience has prepared me to work with students of all ages and needs, and it has made me especially adept at explaining concepts in fun, creative, yet succinct ways. I have been taught some of the leading techniques in music education, and I am experienced in working with students from a variety of different backgrounds in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I spent the Spring 2024 semester studying abroad in Europe with Adéla Štajnochrová, which has broadened my perspective and enhanced my playing abilities. Engaging with music students and schools from other countries has helped me better understand how to incorporate the best of different teaching styles to support my students. Previously, I was the teacher's assistant to the Mountain View High School string orchestra for 4 years, and conducted them as an assistant conductor for two years. I have experience giving one-on-one lessons and support to musicians in the orchestra in violin, viola, and even cello, as well as leading sectionals. I also have experience student teaching at Avenues: the World School and the Manhattan Academy of Technology, where I taught students from k-12 with various mixed ensembles. I have been teaching private lessons for 8 years and love teaching students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced students. I am also fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and have given lessons in Mandarin. My teachers have included Ron Waibel (2014 - 2022), Adéla Štajnochrová (2024), and Gregory Fulkerson (2022 - present)

My goal is to get students excited about the violin. I approach lessons with enthusiasm, while being detail-oriented in fixing and developing a good knowledge of basic musicianship. I believe that music lessons should be tailored to fit the individual, and I aim to provide the best experience for each of my students. I aim to provide a very personalized experience, addressing the skills and fundamentals of every student. My teaching philosophy is that music should be fun and exciting to play and to practice, but that we should never neglect the fundamentals. We can go over anything you would like to play, whether that's pop, jazz, or classical. I will also assist students in picking any piece suitable for their level. I prepare extensive materials to help support my students, writing detailed notes and creating individualized exercises to support them in their learning journey. I am very accommodating of my students' schedules, especially online, and I am a quick and effective communicator! Reach out to me at any time.

Perfect! I wholeheartedly recommend Elissa as a private instructor for any beginner violin/viola student! Elissa started teaching my nine-year-old daughter the viola five months ago, and my daughter is already learning so much in a relatively short amount of time. Elissa makes learning the instrument fun for my kid, and explains concepts in a way that is relatable to her. She is a patient and kind teacher yet she provides constructive and valuable feedback so that my child can improve on her technique. I also appreciate that Elissa proactively touches base with me, as a parent, to let me know of my daughter’s homework, progress and areas of development. Finally, Elissa is reliable and flexible – two other qualities you’d want in a music teacher. All of that said, my child really looks forward to their weekend lessons together, and I am happy about that!

Elissa is a great musician and a patient, helpful teacher who genuinely cares about her students. Her lessons are very well-planned, with a proper balance between technical exercises and etudes, musical learning, and repertoire development. She ensures a very supportive and inspiring atmosphere during the learning process of her students, enabling them to excel with confidence.
She is very good at explaining things, being supportive to her students, and helping them gain confidence while getting better at their skills. Her love for teaching, and care for her students shows in all she does.I took lessons with Elissa for a year and a half in high school. I had stopped playing violin for around 3 years and she was the teacher that helped me get back into it. She started by reigniting my passion for violin and found music that suited me and my playing level. She is always super patient and helps you with all the hard parts, and corrects every mistake you make. She made me realize how important fundamentals were, and improved my vibrato and playing style a lot.

Details
I will travel anywhere in the Bay Area. I calculate my transportation fee based on time and will charge based on my hourly rate for the time spent traveling to you, but not the way back.
Cancellation policy: I encourage students to cancel or reschedule 48 hours before a lesson to avoid incurring a 50% fee. This excludes cases of emergency and illness.
