I believe in approaching the topic in 3 stages. The first is a discussion-dialogue oriented stage, where I discuss with the student what their expectations or needs are, what they are interested to learn from the topic. This serves as an icebreaker and it also helps me prepare for Stage 3. In the second stage, I personally understand whatever the academic curriculum and the syllabus demands of the topic, what are the specific points to pay attention to, what are the previous years' question papers, etc. This is a very lecture-heavy stage, because it is mostly me imparting information. The third stage, is a discussion-lecture hybrid stage, where I develop those dimensions of the topic the student was passionate about in Stage 1 and inform it with whatever s/he learnt in Stage 2. This allows me to approach the topic holistically.
