About Morgan

I'm a research scientist and educator based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with a deep love for making biology accessible and exciting. My journey from undergraduate student to graduate researcher to biotech consultant has shown me firsthand how transformative great teaching can be—and how frustrating it is when complex topics aren't explained well. I became a tutor because I genuinely enjoy that "lightbulb moment" when a student finally grasps a concept they've been struggling with. Outside the lab, I'm a curious learner myself, always exploring new scientific developments and finding ways to connect them to everyday life. Whether you're dreading your next biology exam or genuinely fascinated by the subject but need extra support, I'm here to meet you where you are and help you succeed with patience, encouragement, and proven strategies.

As a research scientist with extensive teaching experience and advanced graduate training in molecular biology and genetics, I believe effective tutoring is about meeting students where they are and building their confidence alongside their competence. My approach centers on three core principles: understanding the "why" behind concepts, applying knowledge to real-world contexts, and developing problem-solving skills that extend beyond a single exam.

Teaching Method and Techniques

Active Learning & Concept Mapping:
I avoid passive lecturing in favor of guided discovery. I start by assessing what a student already knows, then use targeted questions to help them build connections between concepts. For complex topics like cellular respiration or genetics, I use concept mapping to help students visualize relationships between processes, which transforms memorization into understanding.

Real-World Applications:
I bring my research experience into tutoring sessions by connecting abstract concepts to tangible examples. For instance, when teaching DNA replication, I relate it to the CRISPR gene editing work I've done in the lab. This helps students see biology as a dynamic, relevant science rather than just textbook material.

Adaptive Scaffolding:
I adjust my explanations based on each student's learning style and background. For visual learners, I sketch diagrams and flowcharts. For students who need concrete examples, I use analogies and hands-on demonstrations. I break complex problems into manageable steps, gradually removing support as confidence builds.

Active Recall & Spaced Practice:
Rather than simply re-reading notes, I guide students through active recall techniques and practice problems that reinforce learning. I teach students how to study effectively, not just what to study.

A Typical Lesson Plan
Each session begins with a brief check-in to review previous material, identify current challenges, and set clear goals for the day. I then address confusing concepts using visual tools like diagrams and concept maps, asking targeted questions to uncover gaps in understanding and connect new material to what students already know. The bulk of our time is spent on guided practice, where I first model problem-solving strategies, then students work through similar problems with my support as difficulty gradually increases. As students gain confidence, they practice independently while I observe and provide immediate, constructive feedback that celebrates progress and reframes mistakes as learning opportunities. We close by summarizing key takeaways, previewing upcoming topics, and establishing practice strategies for independent study between sessions.

My tutoring is designed for high school students in general, honors, or AP Biology; undergraduate students in introductory through advanced biology courses (cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, developmental biology, and anatomy & physiology); pre-health students preparing for the MCAT or needing support in nursing, pharmacy, dental, or medical programs; community college students at any level or preparing to transfer; and non-traditional or returning students seeking biology refreshers or career changes into healthcare or biotechnology.

I specialize in supporting diverse learning styles—visual, hands-on, and verbal learners—as well as students with learning differences, test anxiety, or English language learners needing extra support with scientific terminology. My areas of expertise include genetics, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, gene editing and biotechnology, bioinformatics, laboratory techniques, and scientific writing.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
My hands-on research experience with CRISPR gene editing, single-cell genomics, and bioinformatics means I can explain not just what happens in biology, but how scientists actually use these techniques in real labs. I've co-authored peer-reviewed publications and mentored students from diverse backgrounds, from undergraduates discovering microbiology to graduate researchers mastering advanced techniques. This combination of research expertise and teaching experience allows me to make complex concepts accessible while connecting textbook material to cutting-edge science.

My Commitment to You
Whether you're struggling with basic concepts, preparing for a major exam, or aiming for mastery of challenging material, I'm here to help you succeed. My goal isn't just to help you pass your next test—it's to help you truly understand biology and develop the critical thinking skills that will serve you throughout your academic and professional journey.
Let's work together to transform your relationship with biology from frustration to fascination!
