About Ali
Здравствуйте! I'm Ali, a native Russian speaker based in Astana, Kazakhstan, with over 10 years of teaching experience across university classrooms, IB DP/MYP education, and online platforms.
I'm currently a PhD candidate, and outside academia I work as a musician and sound engineer — a background that gives me a sharp ear for pronunciation, rhythm, and the sound of language, which carries over directly into how I teach speaking and listening skills.
Lessons are planned in advance, built around your level and goals, and held online via Zoom or Google Meet. Looking forward to working with you.

Teaching method and techniques:
I don't run lessons from a fixed textbook track — I build each one around the student's actual level and goal, whether that's conversational confidence, grammar accuracy, or reading/writing fluency. Every session is delivered over Zoom/Google Meet with slides and materials I prepare specifically for that lesson (not generic worksheets), so you're always working with content pitched at exactly where you are. I draw on communicative teaching techniques — meaning we use the language actively, not just study it in the abstract — combined with the structured, curriculum-based habits I've picked up from years of IB and university teaching: clear objectives per lesson, spaced review so nothing is learned once and forgotten, and regular checks that you can actually use what we covered, not just recognize it.
A typical lesson (60 minutes):
5–10 min — Warm-up & review: quick conversation in Russian, recap of previous material to reinforce retention
15–20 min — New material: grammar point, vocabulary set, or skill (e.g. listening, reading) introduced through the slides, with real examples rather than isolated rules
20–25 min — Active practice: speaking exercises, guided dialogue, writing tasks, or targeted drills — this is where most of the lesson's value sits
5–10 min — Wrap-up: brief feedback on what went well and what to focus on, plus a short task or material to review before the next lesson
What sets me apart as a tutor:
Most Russian tutors are either native speakers with no formal teaching background, or trained teachers without native fluency. I combine both, plus something rarer: active PhD-level research experience and 5+ years of university teaching, layered with IB DP/MYP classroom practice. In practice, this means lessons are genuinely planned, not improvised — every session has a clear structure and purpose, materials are built for you rather than pulled off a shelf, and I'm equally comfortable explaining why a grammar rule works as I am just modeling correct usage naturally as a native speaker.
