About Erika
My name is Erika Boetto, I have a degree in Zoology with Neuroscience (Animal Behaviour), and I am currently a PGDE Secondary student in Biology and Sciences.
During my last year of university, I took part in the Undergraduate Biologist School Ambassador scheme. Here, I had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in communicating biological sciences to young people in a school setting and working as a teacher assistant. I was chosen by Charleston School, situated in Cove, where I was assigned a P3. In my weekly classes, my aim was to promote STEM subjects through a series of activities suited to the children's age. Inclusion and peer collaboration were also vital for me, as in the class there was a child with severe behavioural issues. Lastly, I could provide the placement evaluation I received by the teacher of my class. This highly enriching experience convinced me to a career in teaching.
Moreover, I have been working as an English tutor for 7 years, and here I had the chance to work with children and adults of a wide range of different background. This helped me to learn how to adapt my communication according to the person in front of me and tailoring my lessons according to the students’ needs. Working with kids pushes me to find new and creative ways to explain concepts, according to the different learning styles. Additionally, it is very important for me to be calm and patient and create a warm, safe and friendly environment, in order to enhance learning experience.
In 2012 I worked as an au pair in Australia, Darwin for a little girl diagnosed with autism and her brother (respectively 3 and 6 years old). This experience helped me to learn how to be patient and deal with all the struggles an autistic child has to overcome on a daily basis.
My strong background in hospitality and retail strengthen my interpersonal communication skills, ensuring to deliver to best customer care in a friendly and approachable way. It also increased my ability to work in team and helped me to actively listen to my customers and colleagues, promoting a healthy and friendly environment.
I have also been Greenpeace Milan coordinator, where I had the chance to hold presentations in schools and Universities in Milan, which also helped me to adapt contents according to the audience. I was in charge of supervising volunteers and delegate tasks, but most importantly, my main duty was to be a reliable and confident go-to person for any problem that might arise.
I am goal-oriented but still looking for my own creative way of solving problems in the most efficient way.
Lastly, I hold a 100 hrs TEFL course.
I am a reliable and hard-working individual, with a warm and enthusiastic personality and with a strong attitude towards teaching. I'm flexible, quick to pick up new skills and eager to learn from others.
