About Ross
I'm a scientist and current PhD researcher at University College London (UCL), specialising in immunology and CAR-T cell therapy. Before starting my PhD, I worked at AstraZeneca and Quell Therapeutics, as well as in academic research, giving me experience across several different scientific environments.
During my time at AstraZeneca, I was involved in interviewing prospective colleagues, asking candidates questions and contributing feedback as part of the team's recruitment process. This gave me valuable insight into what scientific employers look for, how candidates are assessed, and what makes someone stand out beyond their technical qualifications.
I've also experienced the recruitment process from the other side, successfully navigating applications and interviews across academia, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry.
Alongside my research, I have experience teaching at university level and enjoy helping others develop their scientific understanding and confidence.
I know how daunting entering the scientific job market can be, particularly when you're competing against more experienced candidates or facing unfamiliar interview questions.
My goal is to share the practical knowledge I've gained throughout my career to help aspiring scientists make the most of their experience, recognise their strengths, and approach new opportunities with confidence.
I believe that being a successful candidate isn't just about having the right qualifications. It's about communicating your knowledge, demonstrating genuine enthusiasm, and showing employers the kind of colleague you could become.

Land your dream job in science!
Breaking into the scientific industry can be difficult, especially when you're just starting out. Having experienced scientific recruitment from both sides of the interview table, I can offer practical advice and targeted training informed by real experience in academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
My lessons are friendly, practical and tailored to your individual needs after a free consultation. Whether you're applying for your first laboratory position, a PhD, or making the transition from academia to industry, I can help you prepare and present yourself confidently.
What I can offer:
- CV and application reviews: Identifying your strengths, improving how you communicate your experience, and tailoring applications to specific scientific roles.
- Interview preparation: Developing convincing answers to common and challenging questions, including technical, behavioural and competency-based questions.
- Mock interviews: Practising realistic scientific interviews, with constructive feedback on your answers, communication and overall impression.
- Overcoming experience gaps: Learning how to demonstrate enthusiasm, transferable skills and scientific understanding, even when you don't meet every requirement in a job description.
- Inside knowledge of scientific recruitment: Drawing on my experience participating in candidate interviews at AstraZeneca, I can share insights into how scientific teams assess applicants, what makes a candidate stand out, and the qualities employers value beyond technical ability.
- Industry vs academia: Understanding how interviews and expectations differ between pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms and academic research.
- Scientific presentations: Preparing to present and defend your research confidently, including handling difficult follow-up questions.
My approach
I believe that enthusiasm, preparation, scientific understanding and the ability to communicate your strengths can be just as important as technical experience, particularly for early-career positions.
Having participated in interviews and candidate assessments within industry, I've seen first-hand that employers aren't simply looking for someone who can tick every box on a job description. They're also looking for people who demonstrate initiative, curiosity, confidence, and the ability to contribute positively to a team.
Rather than teaching you scripted answers, I'll help you draw on your own experiences to develop thoughtful, authentic responses that demonstrate your potential.
How lessons work
Sessions typically last 60 minutes and are tailored to your goals. We can work through an upcoming interview or application together, conduct a realistic mock interview, review your CV, or develop your broader interview skills.
Who are my lessons for?
Undergraduate and postgraduate students, recent graduates, and early-career scientists looking to enter or progress within biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, life sciences or academic research, or simply those looking for a new opportunity to brush up their skills.
No previous interview experience is necessary!

I know Ross through the science community, and one thing I’ve always appreciated about him is how good he is at explaining complicated scientific topics in a way that’s easy to understand.
I remember him explaining CAR-T cell, which can be quite a complex topic, but he managed to break it down in a way that was clear and easy to follow without oversimplifying the science. I think that says a lot about his ability to teach.
He’s knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely enjoys sharing what he knows. I think he’d be a great tutor, especially for students who struggle with science or just need someone who can explain things differently. I’d definitely recommend Ross to anyone looking for a tutor who can make science feel less intimidating and much more enjoyable to learn.View more recommendations
