When I plan a lesson using direct instruction with manipulatives, I start by setting a clear learning objective and selecting manipulatives that align with the concept I want to teach. I introduce the lesson with a concise explanation, using these hands-on tools to visually and physically demonstrate the idea. I carefully model each step, ensuring that my students understand the connection between the manipulative and the abstract concept. As I move into guided practice, I ask questions and offer immediate feedback to address any misconceptions. Once my student shows confidence, I encourage them to work independently while I monitor their progress. I always wrap up with a reflective discussion to connect the hands-on experience back to the broader learning objective, reinforcing their understanding and boosting their confidence. If time allows, I love pairing literature with the overall theme, there are books for everything!
