About George

I am a highly qualified and experienced mathematician, mathematics teacher and chemist, with more than 20 years of experience teaching and supporting students of different ages, abilities and educational backgrounds.
I hold Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics, specialising in Applied and Engineering Mathematics, together with qualifications in Mathematics Education and Chemistry. I am a Qualified Teacher of Secondary Mathematics (QTS) and a PVG Scheme member for working with children and young people.
I currently work at an IB World School as Head (Coordinator) of Mathematics, where I teach IB MYP Mathematics and IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA). I am also a STEM Teacher and Coordinator, working with students in mathematics, science, engineering, robotics, coding, technology and mathematical modelling.
During my university studies, I was twice recognised with a Best Mathematician Award and received a Merit Award for Scientific and Research Excellence. I am also a Mensa member.
My experience ranges from secondary-school mathematics to college, university and undergraduate mathematics, including Applied and Engineering Mathematics. Having taught students from many different educational and cultural backgrounds, I understand that there is no single approach that works for every learner.
My goal as a teacher is not simply to improve examination results, but to help students become confident, independent mathematical thinkers who genuinely understand what they are doing.

Every student is different, so my lessons are individually designed around the student's ability, learning style and academic goals.
I normally begin by identifying the student's existing knowledge, strengths, misconceptions and gaps. From there, I develop a structured learning programme that focuses on the areas where the student can make the greatest progress.
I teach mathematics from secondary-school level through to college and university, including National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Mathematics, IB MYP, IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA), undergraduate mathematics, and Applied and Engineering Mathematics.
My specialist areas include algebra, functions, calculus, differentiation, integration, trigonometry, geometry, vectors, sequences, statistics, probability, linear algebra, mathematical modelling and problem-solving, as well as more advanced university-level topics.
I place particular emphasis on understanding rather than memorisation. Students should understand not only how to use a mathematical method, but also why it works. Wherever appropriate, I connect mathematics to real applications in science, engineering, technology and everyday problem-solving.
For students preparing for examinations, lessons can include targeted revision, examination techniques, worked examples, past-paper and exam-style questions, identification of common mistakes, and strategies for improving accuracy, speed and confidence.
For students who find mathematics difficult, I work systematically to rebuild missing foundations and confidence without unnecessary pressure. For stronger students, I can extend the curriculum with more challenging problems and advanced mathematical ideas.
Lessons are friendly and supportive, but structured and academically challenging. Whether the aim is to pass an examination, move from a B to an A, achieve a top IB grade, prepare for university, or simply understand mathematics properly, the tuition is built around the individual student and their goals.
