About Ryan

After graduating from Drama Centre London and performing and producing within the UK my career in theatre has taken me all over the world, from running the only professional English language theatre company in Vietnam to conducting workshops in Bangladesh and performances in China. I have taught acting and public speaking at drama schools and privately to children, young adults and professional actors. Around 90% of the drama school applicants I have taught have gone on to attend accredited drama schools. I have an enhanced DBS certificate and am a co-founder and course leader for actingunlocked.co.uk

My sessions are all about creating a safe, comfortable and fun environment for us to explore your piece. I'm also happy to help suggest pieces and find the one that's right for you. I like to pull from multiple techniques and ways of working to adapt my approach to best fit you. If you've ever felt acting coaching or training can be too pompous, complicated, or abstract then my sessions might be for you as I look to avoid this! I strive to ensure all of the work we do will be grounded in reality and practically useful for your performance or audition. If you're from an underrepresented group within the industry (socio-economic background, race, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity etc...) and might struggle to afford my rates, let me know as I'd be keen to help!

  • When did you start practising? How did this passion find you?

I've been acting since I was 5 years old! There's something about the act of creating and sharing that has always fascinated me.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I'm a huge fan of Complicité - the work they do brings to life theatre in a way that constantly surprises me but still maintains the truth of the story. I'm also a big fan of science fiction - core stories about what it means to be human are the same no matter what setting! A couple of my favourite actors would be Patrick Stewart, David Tennant and Olivia Coleman.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

Remember that it's only make-believe and it's supposed to be fun! Perseverance is important but also knowing when to step away for your own wellbeing is absolutely key. Lastly, remember there's no one way to be an actor or to have a career - do it your way in a way that makes you happy. Life is too short for anything else!
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Walk away from it! Having time away from a project to allow it to percolate in the back of your mind is essential. You'd be amazed the work your brain does on something when you're not actively thinking about it. Spending too long focussing on something gives you tunnel vision. Walk away, go out, be in nature, see friends, have fun! I promise when you return you'll find a renewed sense of purpose.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

For me it's about what makes us human - storytelling has been in our blood since we first learnt to communicate with each other. It's a weird combination of being this ancient, purposeful thing and at the same time being, essentially, playing and having fun. That's what makes it beautiful.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

For myself, it's the plays I put on in Vietnam, directing the Vietnamese premiere of Beckett's Waiting for Godot was not easy! But that's a first that will never happen again. The other would be the number of young people that I've helped move on in their careers and get into training - particularly a summer I spent coaching young people from disadvantaged backgrounds for Drama school auditions.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I was blown away by one student of mine who ended up playing Lucky in my Godot. For those that don't know Lucky may be one of the most challenging parts you can play. stooped over and mute for the most part of the play you then have to deliver a 5-page stream of consciousness that on the surface seems nonsense but hides meaning. Challenging for even an experienced actor. A 15-year-old auditioned for the part and there was something in me that just saw he could do it. And he did! He received a standing ovation every night we were up - incredible at that age!
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Have fun, create a space that is welcoming and safe and don't take myself too seriously!
