About Robert

My name is Rob McClurg, and I've spent over 30 years at the intersection of extreme vocal power and technical precision. Forged under the mentorship of 'American Metal Legend' Tim Aymar and James Murphy, I now bridge the gap between world-class performance and neurological wellness.
As a Superprof Ambassador, I hold Advanced Professional Certifications in Music Therapy, Sound Healing, and Brain Health & Neuroplasticity from ALLEGRA Learning Solutions, alongside a Verified Certificate in Introduction to Music Theory from BerkleeX. I specialize in helping vocalists find maximum power through Neuro-Vocal grounding.
Due to an incurable cancer (ATLL) and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, I dedicate my time to teaching, writing new meditations, and performing live occasionally. Whether I'm writing with my band, Consumed X Chemistry, or working with students in the Portland / Vancouver area + online, my mission is to reinvigorate the human spirit through the safe, anatomical mastery of sound.
Located in Vancouver, Washington. Available times: Pacific Time - 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

I teach you to master your instrument with zero risk of damage. Sessions build on Speech Level Singing (SLS) and vocal anatomy, adapted for false chord, fry screaming, grunge, and operatic soprano.
Individualized Curriculum: Custom plans tailored to your goals, including pitch indicator charts for guitar/bass (ideal for vocalists playing strings).
Anatomical Safety: Strict SLS expands your range seamlessly, removing the 'break' and protecting vocal folds from strain or tearing.
Acoustic Grounding: Using my Brain Health & Music Therapy training, we apply 432Hz resonance to stimulate the Vagus nerve, reducing cortisol and anxiety.
Extreme Control: Safely deconstruct vocal fry, compressed distortion, and operatic power for maximum projection.
Functional Theory: Backed by BerkleeX training, we map structural mechanics so you command the architecture of the music you perform.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

My passion for music began at age 5 when I first started singing. It truly deepened as I grew older and realized the voice is a biological instrument capable of limitless expression. While I’ve always been drawn to the guitar, my true "instrument" became the human voice once I began studying the mechanics behind it—from the power of operatic resonance to the grit of metal vocals.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I constantly cycle through artists that push boundaries. Whether it’s technical metal or classic opera, I’m drawn to music that prioritizes authentic vocal technique and emotive storytelling. I find myself coming back to vocal-heavy compositions where I can deconstruct the technique while simply enjoying the artistry.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most riveting course I teach involves bridging the gap between "distortion" and "vocal health." Many students come to me wanting to scream or growl like their metal idols without destroying their vocal cords. Applying Certified Neuro-Vocal principles to these extreme styles is transformative. Seeing a student realize they can achieve "metal grit" safely, with the same technical precision required for an operatic aria, is always the most rewarding breakthrough.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Without a doubt, the human voice. Unlike a guitar or piano, you cannot see your instrument, and you cannot "put it down." You have to master it through proprioception—feeling the subtle muscular adjustments inside the larynx. You are both the player and the instrument, which makes the psychological and physiological connection unique and incredibly complex.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Consistency and physiological awareness. I don’t believe in "pushing through pain." Success comes from understanding how your body produces sound at a neurological level. When a student stops trying to "make" a sound and starts understanding the "mechanism" behind it, their progress accelerates exponentially. I also heavily integrate custom pitch references, specifically using the A4=432Hz tuning standard, to help students find a more natural, resonant frequency.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite coffee shop in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to sit down at a quiet coffee shop—as I am a recovered alcoholic with 20 years of sobriety—to chat with three musicians who have shaped my journey. First, Warrel Dane, as I have spent time dedicated to a homage project for his work and would love to discuss his vocal phrasing. Second, Tim Aymar, so we could continue working on our collaboration together. Finally, Chuck Schuldiner, just because he is the godfather of the genre.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Early in my career, I struggled with the misconception that "power" meant "loudness." I remember a specific moment in my training where I stopped trying to force my voice and instead focused on pure vocal efficiency. The moment I released the tension, the sound became exponentially louder and clearer. It was the moment I stopped being a "singer" and became a "vocal athlete," and that is the philosophy I bring to every lesson today.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

It's the "Neuro-Vocal" and Sound Healing perspective. I don't just teach notes; I teach the student how their brain communicates with their vocal apparatus. Whether we are preparing for a stage performance, recording in a studio, or working through vocal therapy techniques, I provide a holistic, customized curriculum that treats the student as an athlete of the voice—and as a human being as well.
