About Bill

Hi! I’m Bill-George Androutsopoulous-Agiotatos (you can call me BG). I’m a Greek chess coach with over 4 years of professional coaching experience, 17 years of high level playing chess experience in Greek and Open Tournaments around the world, with a peak FIDE rating of 2189(2800 in chess com/lichess). One of my proudest moments was defeating Grandmaster Dimitrios Mastrovasilis(Greece Number 2 at that time 2630 FIDE) in the Greek Final Cup in 2021.((concealed information)

I’m as passionate about sharing chess knowledge as I am about playing the game, and I’ve always enjoyed helping students grasp the intricacies of chess strategy and improve their game, especially beginners.

Outside of chess, I’m a Computer Engineer graduate with master in Digital Marketing and Consumer-Decision Theory. I’m also deeply into other mind games—having reached the top 50 in Hearthstone, and I’m decent at poker.

Why This Works & What Makes It Different:

I bring 18+ years of high-level competitive experience (including wins against Grandmasters) and have coached over 200 students. This isn't a side hustle for me; it's a passion refined through years of practice and teaching. While many online coaches are new to the game with limited experience, I offer proven methods that build genuine, lasting improvement. We'll build your opening repertoire, your understanding, and your confidence.

Whether you're starting out or aiming high, I'm here to help you unlock your full potential with a method that’s both professional and deeply personal.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

Chess found me super early! My sister and I started learning around age 4 from our dad, who hilariously barely knew the rules himself. I was eager to join a club right away, but a wise teacher suggested waiting until I was 6 to better grasp things like coordinates. That little delay just made me more passionate (and I was always asking my dad for a game)!
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I'm hugely inspired by the classics - players like Tal and Alekhine had such a captivating style. Anand is another big one; his game against Aronian is an all-time favorite of mine. And, of course, Magnus Carlsen's dominance is just incredible to watch!
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area ?

Beyond just knowing the game, I think a coach needs a contagious enthusiasm for chess! But crucially, it's about adaptability. You can't just teach the same lesson to everyone. Understanding different play styles and offering truly personalized solutions and new ways of thinking is key.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Honestly, if it's something you're truly passionate about, like chess can be, the focus often comes naturally. But if I had to give one tip, especially for chess, it's that consistent, shorter bursts of effort - say, 30-60 minutes a day - are often far more effective than rare, marathon sessions.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

I absolutely love teaching chess. It's so refreshing to see the game through my students' eyes. It often takes me back to my own early struggles and makes me appreciate the whole beautiful journey of chess even more deeply.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Definitely my classical, over-the-board win against Greece's No. 2 Grandmaster, rated 2630 FIDE. I was literally almost shaking when I realized he was about to resign. Beating such an amazing player was a feeling I'll never forget for the rest of my life.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Yes, absolutely! Just a couple of months ago, a student who started with me around a 1500 rating on chess.com shot up to 2500 within a year. He even started beating me in some rapid games! There's no better feeling than that - it tells you you've done a good job.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

If there's a secret, it's probably listening. When I first started coaching, I thought I needed to pack as much information as possible into every minute. Now, I truly understand the power of asking questions, making sure students are with me, and checking their understanding before diving deeper into complex ideas.
