About Alice
Hi there, I am an enthusiastic and friendly individual who loves to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds through a love of learning and especially English studies in which I specialise. My hobbies include: creative writing; working as an assistant reader for Firewords Magazine (if you haven’t yet heard of them, check them out!); biking, swimming, running, hiking and camping and I love a bit of tennis and cricket on the side – playing that is – I’m never far from the hills or sea side. If I’m not outside doing some kind of activity, you are most likely to find me with a cup of tea, reading on the couch, on a lazy Sunday afternoon or teaching my students online sharing my enjoyment and knowledge of the subject and requirements for the exams if they need. Hi there!
I am a certified English Literature and Language teacher and Teach First ambassador, specialising in secondary schools (years 7-13), since 2012, and prep schools (years 4-8) since 2018, teaching ages 8-18 in all areas of the English curriculum as well as exams: 11+, 13+, specific entry exams, GCSE and A Level exams.
I have been tutoring one-to-one since 2015 and found, since the 2020 lockdown, that tutoring online can be just as beneficial if not better for several reasons: no travel for either party; shared resources online rather than requiring a printer, therefore saving paper; allowance for different ways of communicating rather than just speech - for example, silent discussions through typed notes that can be edited, saved and stored immediately - which is especially beneficial for students with speech impairments or those who communicate better through writing.
I have been working for a home-education group in the woods, near to where I live, since September 2019 and have continued to learn and explore the importance of creativity, immersion in a task and a level of autonomy on a student's learning path. I aim to reproduce what I have learnt in my years of experience to offer online tutoring lessons for both individuals and groups, each lesson lasting 1 hour and usually consisting of a planned course that can be adjusted on a formative basis. Alternatively, I offer more relaxed tutoring sessions, depending on the students' needs, that are adjusted week-by-week but are not necessarily working towards exams.
My experience spans from working in one of the most poverty-stricken provinces in Buenos Aires in 2010 as an English tutor for disadvantaged children, to working as a private tutor in Qatar during my three years working in a British international school out there (2015-2018). I am interested in all people, from all walks of life and with all educational backgrounds. I have friends worldwide and would love to reach out to people from outside of the UK! I am also a writer and assistant reader for Firewords magazine in my spare time. My subject is my life.
