  • 1. Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My subject of specialisation is chemistry, the branch of science that explains matter-the building blocks of everything around us. Ever since childhood, I've been intrigued to know about how the universe works. From the food we eat, to how it gets converted to energy, how plants stay alive, why ash is formed when we burn things, different colours of the sky, anything and everything that we see around us and why and how it happens, I really wanted to know and understand these phenomenons. That's why, ever since I got to know that Chemistry is the branch of science that explains matter and its transformation at a molecular and atomic level, I have always found myself drawn to it. Chemistry is a fascinating subject at all levels. Starting from knowing about different elements in the periodic table, how they combine to form different types of compounds that we see and use daily, to knowing more about organic chemistry, its application and relevance in life processes, medicine, materials, etc., the study of Inorganic chemistry to know more about the structures of atoms and molecules, different types of complex formations, variety of reactions, explanation of different colours of different substances, etc. and physical chemistry which bridges the gap between physics and chemistry, providing us with tools and principles to understand, predict and control chemical reactions. The best thing about chemistry is its ability to solve real-world problems. Whether it's for developing new drugs, creating sustainable energy sources or addressing environmental issues, chemistry plays a crucial role.
  • 2. What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My motivation to teach stems from a combination of personal experiences, role models and a strong belief in the transformative power of education. I've always found chemistry to be a fascinating subject. But I do know that a lot of students find it difficult to understand. Teaching allows me to share my knowledge in chemistry in an easily understandable way so that more students can appreciate the beauty of chemistry, rather than being uninterested in the subject due to lack of understanding. I've had some incredible teachers in my life.who made complex topics accessible and encouraged me to think critically. I would especially like to mention my chemistry professor in 10+2 level. He made each and every class interesting and made us understand and love chemistry as a subject. Personally, he was also a good life mentor. He was the one who encouraged me to take up Chemistry and do graduation and PG in it. I aspire to become a teacher like him. Someone who is loved and respected by students.
  • 3. How does your work help society?

Teaching chemistry is highly impactful for society because it equips people with necessary knowledge and skills to address some of the world's most difficult challenges. It helps in building a scientifically literate society. A scientifically literate society can make better decisions regarding heath, technology and environmental issues. Chemistry is an essential subject for people who want to pursue careers like doctor, engineer, scientists , science teachers and professors, chemists, etc. The students I teach might one day make some life-saving drugs/ contribute to make cleaner energy sources/ save patient's lives/ make remarkable machines and AI tools, etc. Chemistry also plays a central role in solving global issues like climate change, global warming, energy shortage, pollution, etc.
  • 4. If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

As a role model, I would choose Marie Curie. She inspires me in many ways. She was a trailblazer in the field of Chemistry and Physics. She was the first woman to win a nobel prize and remains the only person to have won Nobel prizes in two different scientific fields (Chemistry and Physics). Her groundbreaking works on radioactivity laid the foundation for nuclear science and medical treatments such as radiotherapy for cancer treatment. As a tutor, I aim to emulate her pioneering spirit by encouraging students to explore new ideas. She was a brilliant educator as well. She taught at the University of Paris and mentored numerous students who went on to make significant contributions to science. Her commitment to education resonates deeply with me. As a woman, Marie Curie faced significant challenges in the male-dominated field, yet she never let societal barriers stop her from pursuing her passion for science.Despite her fame, she stayed humble. She even refused to patent her discoveries so that they could benefit humanity. This humility and integrity inspires me to teach with selflessness. Her legacy reminds me that teaching chemistry isn't just about equations and formulas-It's about empowering students to use their knowledge to make a difference in the world.
  • 5. Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I actually have a wide range of hobbies. Sometimes I am into novels, sometimes I watch dramas, Dancing , Cooking, Art and Craft and even some games! It all depends on my mood and the amount of free time I have.
  • 6. Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

So, it was when I was a new teacher and I went to teach chemistry in grade 10 of a school. When I asked them in the first class about their views on chemistry, most of them said that they disliked it. They had to memorise a lot and it was very confusing. So, I started teaching them basic topics, even topics which were already done in previous grades, but they didn't understand properly. I used to give them examples and make relations to real life so that it became easier for them to understand. One day when I was teaching stoichiometry and balancing chemical equations, a student was stuck as she didn't understand how to do it and why it was important. I first gave them a trick formula using which they could solve most of the equation balancing questions. As for the "why it was necessary" part, I related chemistry to something she was interested in- cooking. I told her that, like for baking a cake, we need the right proportions of ingredients, similarly, for getting a desired product, we need the right proportions of reactants. Then, she immediately understood and took interest in that topic. Over time, most of the students started liking chemistry as a subject and loved me as a teacher as well. They looked forward to our classes, and so did I.
