About Sherry

An honours English student who studied at the University of British Columbia and the University of Edinburgh, I have over 4000 hours of experience teaching and tutoring. Beginning in 2019, I have over 5 years of experience on this platform and I take pride in being one of the first English tutors on Superprof. Previously, I've worked as a TA (teaching assistant) for English at UBC. I have extensive experience reading and grading essays, and my university and high school students go on to achieve top marks in their classes. My current highest level of editing is at a PhD candidacy level. I am currently doing my postgraduate degree at UBCI've not only been a TA, but held multiple research fellowships at UBC as a paid climate studies and game studies researcher. In my time at the university, I received the Trek Excellence scholarship, graduated on the Dean's list, and held several academic scholarships in which I was faculty nominated for in my department (Gilean Douglas, Margaret Lawrence). I received a 5 on both my AP Literature and Language exams, and am very familiar with the content in both.

Oftentimes, universities do not properly teach essay writing at their respective level; they assume students were taught how in high school, or have taken another course that did. Understanding the psychology behind what teachers and professors seek in a paper is knowledge only gained with extensive experience, which is information I seek to pass on. My methodology aims to pare down complex writing concepts into the absolute simplest terms possible, with a focus on academic writing. I adapt to each student's existing skill set to ensure they have a secure foundation in essay writing, emphasizing structure. Oftentimes I will also teach formulas for recurring essay types to make the writing process simpler - this includes, but is not limited to: summaries, literature reviews, synthesis, critical analyses, rhetorical analyses, research. During the drafting stage, I will usually give thesis suggestions. STATISTICS AND FURTHER INFORMATION: My most commonly tutored areas of writing are the following: WRDS and ENGL at UBC, high school and IB English, upper-year essay-based courses in the humanities and liberal arts, and University applications. On average, my students who have previously taken English improve their grade by about 15%. I always aim to explain any edits we make together thoroughly, and want students to walk away understanding these changes. The end goal is to improve to the point of not needing help in the future! I guarantee quality in both my pedagogical approaches with younger students, and editing with university level students. Classes come equipped with my personal "student's guarantee" - if you feel like your writing hasn't improved within a month, I guarantee a full refund. I am extremely invested in each student, and am confident that anyone can improve their writing through these classes. **I'm currently quite booked but respond fairly quickly. I limit my student spots each semester to ensure I have time for every student. To receive a prompt response, please send inquiries with detailed information **

  • 1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I've always been pretty adept at the arts. I began tutoring on Superprof in 2020 during the pandemic, when it first started up; I think that English is really interesting and nuanced, it helped build critical thinking skills and forces you to map out your arguments in a clear and concise way. Essay writing is such a specific art and structure that I've come to appreciate and enjoy teaching.
  • 2. What makes you passionate about your subject?

The fact that English skills really pertain to all other arts subjects and are applicable no matter the discourse is a large part of it for me. Being able to map out your thoughts on paper is only one part of English; the fact you can take these skills outside the discipline and apply it to political science, psychology, film, and other forms of media is what keeps the subject interesting for me.
  • 3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I enjoy the methodological route that one can take to essays. You read it, and if it doesn't make sense, then you fix it. It's a bit like a puzzle, where you have to carve out the pieces yourself and force them to fit, even if they don't at the moment. It's a bit different of an editing process for creative and journalistic pieces, the structure is definitely not as rigid but still needs to be cohesive. If a piece of writing is already good, it can always get better, so an extra set of eyes can really help you pinpoint any issues. I really thrive off the high of seeing a piece of writing before and after the editing process, and always get overly invested in the grade received for it.
  • 4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I don't have one specific English teacher that has kind of 'defined me,' but I along the way I've definitely had a couple of interesting figures. In high school, my Grade 9 English teacher is the first one who really engaged me in a topic, we did Romeo and Juliet and I remember finding a love for Shakespeare. In Grade 12, My AP Literature and Language teachers were extremely intelligent and supportive - so much so that I ended up receiving the AP Language book award, which is just the highest mark in the grade (that's when I decided I wanted to study English post-secondary). My first English professor at the University of British Columbia was probably the final important figure thus far. We had a really small class, which is super uncommon for university, and so we all ended up having really great conversations. She was just so clever and would quote random philosophers and explain relationships with graphs and charts, that really engaged everyone in the conversation. I still quote some of her tricks and lessons to this day.
  • 5. What are your keys to success?

I think support is really important. Whoever it may be - a tutor, a friend who you always turn to for help, a faculty member, or a family member - I believe if you have enough confidence in yourself, you can achieve nearly anything from just sheer willpower. But you need that support and confidence first.
