About Catherine
Being a private and in-school tutor for nearly 5 years in a variety of different subjects has given me the opportunity to hone my skills as an educator and learn how to tailor my lessons to each individual student. I have worked with a variety of different subjects and ages; from mentoring individuals at GCSE level, all the way to creating workshops and tutoring undergrad students like myself. Getting to know the capabilities and aspirations of my tutees is crucial to me, as it helps me to direct the lessons accordingly and push them to achieve these goals. I believe that students respond effectively to patience and a holistic understanding of their needs- something I implement in all my lessons.
My love for humanities drew me to Philosophy specifically as it intrigued me as a subject of profound intellect and curiosity, due to its ability to develop analytical rigour and to offer logical tools to rationally critique and formulate arguments to help answer some of the most challenging questions. As a humanity, Philosophy provides a wide skill set that can be used interchangeably throughout the other essay-based subjects.

My lessons operate around an assessment of the student’s needs and capabilities, examining areas that they struggle with and devising lesson plans that are tailored to their preferred methods of learning (ie for a student who leans towards being an auditory learner, emphasis is placed on discussion of subject material and minimal use of visual aids so as not to distract from the speech). In my lessons, I focus on the material through the lens of each individual exam board and their specifications and plan my lessons to follow the syllabus they are currently studying. This prevents any confusion from what they are studying in class to their private tutoring. I firmly believe going through past paper questions is the best way for students to understand how their exam board operates, their style of questioning and how they can tailor their knowledge to fit the question. Many students struggle not with understanding of the material but application. To counter this, I have previously created workshops that focus on the planning and application of knowledge in essays. Progress will be measured through weekly homework (tailored for their specific gaps) and a series of monthly examinations where the student will be given a paper that I will tailor to where their need is greatest.
