About Fiona

Fiona Mai, born in Shanghai, China, is a pianist and educator based in Los Angeles. She earned her B.M. in Piano Performance from UCLA and her M.M. from USC. Her musical journey began under the tutelage of Wei Coglio, who equipped her with a strong foundation and opportunities to perform. She has presented recitals in venues ranging from intimate theaters to Stanford’s concert hall and received placements in competitions hosted by USOMC and USIMC. During her pre-college years, Fiona studied with Gwendolyn Mok and received several scholarships to work with David Kaplan at UCLA. As an undergraduate, she was twice nominated for UCLA’s Rubinyi Award, invited to perform at the Chancellor’s Recital, and participated in high-profile masterclasses with artists including Gabriela Montero, Kevin Kwan Loucks, Ning An, Konstantinos Valianatos, Inna Faliks, and Liza Stepanova. In 2024, Fiona graduated summa cum laude as a four-year Shapiro Scholar and continued her graduate studies at USC under Antoinette Perry. While honing her performance abilities, she discovered a calling to teaching and a desire to share music with her community. Under the mentorship of Stephen Pierce, she served as a student instructor for multiple semesters at USC. Fiona ultimately hopes to nurture a lasting curiosity within young musicians and share art through performance, collaboration, and education.

About the lesson

Hello and welcome! I am a teacher committed to fostering curiosity for classical music among my students. Through individualized lesson plans, I adjust to each student’s personality and help them achieve their personal aspirations. Some of my focuses include developing proper finger technique and hand control, cultivating effective practice habits, applying theory to interpret music, fostering a seamless sound production, and executing convincing performances even in demanding stage settings. After four years of pedagogical training, I am confident working with all levels and types of repertoire. Feel free to send me a message whenever; anyone who has something to say can and should learn the language of music!

Perfect! I am sure you will agree that those of us who are asked to write many recommendations, can sometimes find the task quite tedious and even boring. However, when one is asked to write about a truly mesmerizing and life-changing individual, the task becomes almost pleasurable.
Such is the case now when I write to you on behalf of a superlative young concert pianist, Ms. Fiona Mai, whom I have known since April 2024, when she started sharing her love for music and for life with my thirteen-year-old daughter.
Ms. Mai has recently earned her Bachelor's degree from UCLA, and we were only too delighted to find out that she will actually stay in town for her Master's degree at USC Thornton. Fiona makes playing the piano a truly joyful experience that has also changed my daughter's life in many aspects! A sure master of the core repertory, Fiona's (teaching) style is full of sophisticated attention to detail. Ms. Mai is a winner in every way, incredibly warm, patient and encouraging. She easily ensures that my daughter reaches her musical potential and aspirations while always having a wonderful time with her.
In summary, this is an enthusiastically supportive letter. I know that Ms. Mai will be the perfect (piano) teacher for anyone, and I wish you every success in attracting her! Recommending Ms. Mai as a solid A plus teacher would be an understatement.
