About Frieda

I am a passionate and dedicated tutor who believes that every student is capable of achieving highly with the right support, encouragement, and teaching approach. I aim to create a positive and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, building confidence, and developing independent thinking skills.
I studied English at A-Level and achieved A* grades in both English and History, subjects which strengthened my analytical thinking, essay-writing ability, and understanding of literature and context. Essay writing has always been a particular strength of mine, and I enjoy helping students learn how to structure arguments clearly, analyse texts effectively, and write with confidence and sophistication. I currently study Politics at the University of Edinburgh, where I continue to develop strong critical thinking, research, and communication skills. I have also tutored previously, giving me experience supporting students with different learning styles, confidence levels, and academic goals.
My passion for English extends beyond simply teaching exam content. I enjoy helping students understand the deeper meaning behind texts, develop strong analytical skills, and improve their written expression in a way that feels both rewarding and accessible. I understand that every student learns differently, which is why I adapt my teaching style to suit the individual needs, strengths, and goals of each learner.
Whether I am working with younger students building foundational reading and writing skills or supporting GCSE students preparing for exams, I always strive to push my students to reach the best of their abilities while ensuring lessons remain supportive, motivating, and enjoyable.
Alongside academic progress, I strongly value communication, patience, and consistency. I understand the importance of building trust with both students and parents to create a productive learning experience and help students feel confident in their progress over time.

English

I believe learning should feel engaging, supportive, and confidence-building from the very first few minutes of a lesson. I begin every session with a short “brain crunch” activity linked to the topic we are studying. For example, in English Literature this could be a quick quiz on poetry form and structure, a memory challenge, or a creative starter task. This helps students settle in, refresh prior knowledge, and feel more confident in a fun and interactive way.
My teaching style is patient, adaptable, and encouraging. I tailor lessons to each student’s learning style and academic goals, whether they need support building core skills, preparing for exams, or boosting confidence in the classroom. I focus on creating a calm environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as part of the learning process.
With English specifically, I believe the context behind both Language and Literature is vital. I invest time not only in teaching the subject itself, but also in helping students contextualise passages, themes, and writers so they can develop a deeper understanding and produce more thoughtful analysis in their work. For example, when studying texts such as An Inspector Calls or poetry linked to conflict and power, I help students explore the historical and social context behind the writing so they can understand why writers make certain choices and how this strengthens analytical responses.
I also focus heavily on building independent thinking and exam confidence. Rather than simply memorising quotations and model answers, I teach students how to “think aloud” through a text by breaking down language, structure, and meaning step by step. I often model strong paragraphs and essays before guiding students to create their own responses independently.
Lessons regularly include vocabulary-building activities, retrieval practice from previous lessons, and exam-technique support such as timing questions, planning essays efficiently, and understanding command words like “analyse”, “compare”, and “explore”. I normally like to end lessons with a short creative writing task to encourage imagination, fluency, and confidence in written expression. I also give students 10 new words at the end of each lesson and encourage them to incorporate them into everyday life and future writing, as I believe consistent incorporation is key to developing strong vocabulary naturally and confidently.
Of course, depending on the age and needs of the student, my lessons adapt accordingly — whether I am supporting a 7-year-old developing reading and comprehension skills or helping a student prepare for GCSE examinations. Regardless of level, I aim to push every student to reach the best of their abilities while ensuring lessons remain engaging, supportive, and motivating.
Lessons are typically 1 hour long, although I can adapt timings depending on age and concentration levels. I have experience supporting children and young people across a range of abilities, and I always aim to make lessons both structured and enjoyable.
I work with primary and secondary school students, including those preparing for GCSEs. I also understand the importance of building strong relationships with both students and parents to ensure progress and consistency.
