About Maria
Moving to England from Brazil at the age of ten was challenging, particularly as I had no prior knowledge of the English language. Despite this initial difficulty, I became completely fluent within my first year. This experience sparked my interest in language and, having personally experienced the challenges of learning English as a second language, gave me a strong understanding of the difficulties that other learners may face.
My interest in English ultimately led me to study English (BA) at the University of Nottingham, where I graduated two years ago with a 2:1!
Throughout my degree, I developed strong essay-writing, communication, and critical-analysis skills, while my language modules broadened my understanding of linguistics and literacy. These skills have provided me with a strong foundation for helping students improve their grammar, written English, comprehension and overall confidence in using the language.
Since graduating, I have also worked in the corporate world, where I have developed valuable professional communication skills. This experience means that, alongside academic English, I can help students develop practical English skills for the workplace. This can include improving CVs and cover letters, preparing for interviews, developing professional communication, and building confidence when speaking in a professional environment.
Most importantly, I want my lessons to feel relaxed, enjoyable, and tailored to you. I know first-hand that learning a new language can feel intimidating, so I aim to make English feel much less scary and a lot more fun!

My tutoring style is very interactive, relaxed, and tailored to each student. I like to make lessons feel more like a conversation, with plenty of discussion, questions, and analysis rather than simply working through a textbook.
For students studying English Literature, I want to help them develop their own opinions and interpretations of different texts, while also teaching them how to turn those ideas into strong, sophisticated academic answers. I can help with everything from essay structure and critical analysis to improving vocabulary and making sure their writing is clear and well-developed.
I usually recommend one-hour lessons, but I'm also flexible and happy to work around your schedule. Whether you need regular weekly sessions, some extra support before an exam, or help preparing for an interview or professional situation, I'm happy to adapt the lessons to what works best for you!

Perfect! I needed to prepare myself for a job application and also to improve my English. I asked Maria to assist and teach and also to have a look at my application letter.
