  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

After studying business, I became so fascinated with the human mind and why we do what we do. This led me to start studying psychology, where my passion grew and I became interested in psychological research. I wanted to help people as many people as possible, and to me I believe I can do that through research. One of the things about research I love is finding meaning in numbers and data, which is why I love statistics.
I started tutoring after I found myself explaining difficult stats concepts to many students in my class, and I loved watching them finally start to understand it. I ended up getting an overall grade of 96% in my first stats subject, which led to the university employing me as a statistics tutor. This progressed to me offering my services to outside the uni, as I love spending my time teaching statistics it is almost like a hobby (I know its weird)
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach statistics, data analysis and anything to do with psychological research. My favourite subject to teach is regression, but I also enjoy T-tests and ANOVA analysis too. I like teaching research methods as well, and helping students formulate a plan from beginning to the end of a research project. The one subject I don't like and actually don't really teach is qualitative research (I love numbers).
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My first stats teacher definitely inspired me to love statistics. She used to come into class so excited to teach us statistic and used to wear shirts with funny stats pictures. She also provided a lot of support at the start of the subject, which gave me the confidence to progress through all the stats subjects. I was very very nervous about statistics before I had her.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Definitely be a good listener, be patient, and point out the strengths as well as areas they could work on. When teaching, remember that everyone learns in different ways so if they don't understand something you may need to present it in a different way. Also remember to be compassionate, studying psychology is extremely stressful due to the high minimum GPA required to continue to post-graduate study, so students may be upset or stressed at times.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My favourite memory I think was when I helped out at a workshop of grade 11 and grade 12 students who were interested in studying psychology. They had attended this workshop for an introduction into statistics as they felt like they wouldn't be able to do this component of the degree and as such had doubts of enrolling into psychology. We ended up giving them a little research project and I went around and helped them analyse the data and discover interesting results. I loved seeing how their confidence changed throughout the workshop and how their stress levels decreased by the end of the workshop. I wish every school would do this as I believe it would significantly increase the amount of students that enrol in Psychology.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Oh definitely the subjectiveness of statistics. It drives me crazy! Almost every university has different preferences when conducting an analysis, such as what to do when the data is non-normal. Some universities require non-parametric tests, some bootstrapping and some do nothing at all. It makes it difficult to teach sometimes as I need to ensure I am teaching in alignment with their specific curriculum.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am very passionate about research, and I also love teaching. I genuinely love helping people, and I feel like research and teaching the future psychologists/researchers achieve that. I know statistics is stressful, as I have been in that position. It makes me sad that a lot of people don't study psychology because they are afraid of this component when it is doable and easier than expected. We need more psychologists in the world and I just want to do my part to support people get there.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I will always go above and beyond to ensure you understand the content, or are comfortable with your assignment. I don't want to ever feel unsupported and probably work a little too much!
