Experience: With over 25 years of experience tutoring and teaching ASL, I bring a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to my sessions. Whether it’s refining vocabulary, helping students improve their fluency, or clarifying grammar points, my extensive background enables me to offer personalized support for students at different stages of their ASL journey. As a tutor, my approach centers on creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment that encourages active engagement. Here’s how I approach tutoring:
1. Voice-Off Method: One of the key principles I follow is the voice-off technique. This means using minimal or no verbal communication while teaching, which helps students focus on visual cues and reinforces the importance of non-verbal communication. It’s an effective method for learning American Sign Language (ASL), as it forces students to rely on their hands, facial expressions, and body language to communicate.
2. Mini-Lesson Approach: I focus on addressing specific needs or vocabulary sets in a mini-lesson format. By breaking down the lesson into small, digestible chunks, students are able to grasp concepts more effectively. For example, if a student struggles with a particular group of signs or sentence structure, I focus solely on that area in a focused, manageable lesson. This allows for clear explanations and plenty of practice.
3. Support for High School and College Students: I am particularly skilled at working with high school and college students, especially those navigating their level 1 or level 2 ASL coursework. Whether they need extra help to keep up with their classes or want to deepen their understanding of ASL, I tailor my lessons to fit their specific curriculum and needs.
