About Cynthia
I hold a B.A. in sociology from UW–Madison and a M.A. in international affairs from The George Washington University. I scored a 5.5 on the GRE Analytical Writing Assessment when it was a 1-hour section, placing me in the 98th percentile.
Including the years I spent informally tutoring my younger brother, I have 15+ years of tutoring experience working with middle and high school students, especially students from ESL backgrounds. I also bring a unique perspective as the former legal guardian of my younger brother, who is currently a UPenn M&T student and Gates Scholar. Throughout high school, I was his second pair of eyes on virtually everything college prep-related, especially his competitive summer program, college, and scholarship applications. I reviewed his applications to three highly selective programs: RSI, UPenn M&TSI, and CMU SAMS. He was admitted to M&TSI and SAMS and named an alternate for RSI.
I have helped other students with their college application essays. In one case, I worked one-on-one with a student for six days before his QuestBridge National College Match deadline. He applied to Duke, Stanford, and five Ivy League schools. I helped him revise his essays while preserving his own ideas and voice. In the process, I never discouraged him from expressing what he wanted to say. He ultimately matched with Duke, his first-choice school, and later attributed his successful match to my essay revisions.
As an essay coach, my goal is not to rewrite a student’s work or make it sound ultra-polished. I help students strengthen their ideas, organization, clarity, and writing while preserving their authentic voices. Whether you are brainstorming an essay or polishing a final draft, I want to help you present the strongest version of your own story and writing.

What I help with: College and high school summer program application essays, plus school English writing and grammar assignments.
How I help: Clarity, organization, revision, feedback, and strengthening writing without stripping the writer's voice.
How my approach is distinctive: When I was a high school senior, I experienced firsthand what can happen when an editor goes too far. An English PhD heavily edited my college application essays to the point that my own voice was completely erased. Even back then, as a high school student, I knew I could not submit those revised essays to the universities I was applying to. That experience taught me the importance of balancing effective editing with preserving the writer’s voice, and I have made that principle a priority ever since.
Each session is tailored to where you are in the writing process, whether you are brainstorming ideas, developing a draft, revising your essay, or putting on the finishing touches.
