  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I first developed a passion for music when I was at primary school where I would often participate in singing activities and school plays. I would also record songs on the radio using an old cassette tape deck! I began playing guitar at the age of 8 for a couple of years before a well respected local drummer came to give a demonstration during assembly. Impressed with the performance, it was at this point that I decided that I wanted to make the switch and start learning the drums! The drummer who'd inspired me went on to become my tutor for the start of my drumming journey.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I find myself listening to a lot of Synthwave and Vaporwave music and I always enjoy it. The lack of vocals and the ambient soundscapes created within these microgenres serve as a great backdrop for studying, reading or just listening to relax and escape. The nostalgia for 1980's culture and attempt to capture the era's atmosphere in sound as well as visual art style make these genres appeal to me personally and I can comfortably listen to this type of music for hours!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I will always tailor my lessons to the individual student and their particular skill level. That said, I will often build the lesson around a relatively basic idea but make it challenging enough to test the student in their playing abilities by adding more advanced concepts. If developing more complexity on the instrument is the area of focus, I will ask the student to combine various technical applications with dynamics, orchestrations and subdivisions. This will test their creativity and artistic sensitivity not only as a drummer, but as a musician, where they will be able to apply what they have learnt and develop their existing knowledge, taking it to the next level of musicality and exploration with a strong emphasis on having good dynamic range as this is an essential musical quality that every drummer should possess.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think that the violin would have to be one of the most difficult instruments to master as to begin, there are no guides for your finger placement which means it will take a lot of practice just to become familiar with where your fingers should go to play the right notes for example. Producing a beautiful tone using the bow is another challenge faced by violinists, with the correct volume and pitch being other elements to consider as well as the correct length of the sound being produced.
  • What are your keys to success?

Key factors to consider in reaching your drumming goals include setting aside time to practice, being open to new ideas and absorbing new knowledge. With consistent practice routines and further development of existing concepts, one can expand their own creativity as a drummer by applying more complex motifs to an already solid foundation. Doing so will help one grow successfully as a player and become a more well-rounded musician, ultimately making the whole experience more fun and rewarding!
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Abe Cunningham, Gavin Harrison and Benny Greb as they are all masters of style as well as wildly different drummers. There are countless questions and topics I could talk about with each of them in regards to playing, musical genre and equipment!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Early in my drumming life I had the pleasure of attending a drum clinic featuring world-class drummer Tommy Igoe. Not only did I get to sit and witness his skill and precision on the drums in the flesh with a great audience interaction, tips, questions and answers, but I also had the pleasure of meeting Tommy after the clinic where he gave me a signed Tommy Igoe DW Collector's Card which I still have to this day!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

With commitment, a passion for teaching and helping boost performance confidence, creativity and individuality - I encourage students to build their own unique voice on the instrument and develop their sound as a player by using their repertoire to inform their own creative choices and musical decisions, with a view towards putting this musicianship into practice within future band applications if needed. I am a confident drummer with years of experience playing various genres and enjoy sharing my knowledge and passion for drums with my students while keeping lessons fun and engaging!
