About Gundula
As a tutor, Gundula has been teaching children and adults since more than 25 years, in classical as well as alternative styles (see my alternative profile for regular lessons). As course and workshop facilitator and leader, singing tutor and choir leader, she has more than 15 years of experience, in London, the UK and international.
As a performer, musical leader, arranger and composer, she works with her group Tatcho Drom, performing arts projects as well as for international events and functions. The latest performance project, Macedonian Inspirations, showcases music and dance of her latest research trips throughout Macedonia, telling the stories of her encounters in music and dance. Other still running performance projects, which are regularly performed as special moments for private and corporate events are The Russian Gypsy Soul and Balkan Express.
Originally from Bavaria, Gundula has completed a Bmus in violin and a diploma as piano tutor at the Konservatorium Augsurg, and a postgraduate degree in jazz in Munich. Parallel to that, she had studied Alexander Technique extensively and singing less intensively. Later, she followed her passion Eastern European Romani music and went on regular music discovery journeys to Eastern and South-Eastern regions of Europe. In the last 25 years she has performed as well as conducted workshops and other projects to great acclaim. Her most legendary project was the 45-piece London Gypsy Orchestra which she had founded and directed for 10 years.
Her work has taken her throughout the UK and Europe to festivals, cultural centres and theatres. TV productions include the documentary How Music Works on UK TV’s Channel 4 and a music documentary for TRT (Turkish state television). She has also been a guest and performer on Radio programs for BBC 6, Resonance FM and others.

Gundula Gruen is a virtuoso violinist and singer who has travelled extensively, transcribing melodies that she learned first-hand from Romani and folk musicians. Described by Songlines Magazine as ‘a shining star in the UK’s Balkan music scene’, her unique performance style showcases a technical ability acquired through intensive conservatoire training as well as a colourful and charismatic personality.
Gundula also is a passionate and highly experienced tutor. She loves teaching children and adults of all ages and abilities, inspiring them with her love of making music, her own hard study to master violin technique, and her wide experience of studying classical, jazz, Romani and folk styles the traditional way.
She is an highly acclaimed workshop and master class leader, and vocal tutor for songs and music of Eastern Europe and the Balkan's from both, Romani Gypsy and folk tradition. She run's an ensemble at University, and leads a teaching ensemble and workshops in London and throughout the UK.
Her latest venture was a master’s degree in Ethnomusicology, at City University, London, which she completed with Distinction in September 2018 at City University London. Her research focussed on Macedonian music, and her dissertation is the first comprehensive piece of academic work on Čoček, a Macedonian Romani music and dance genre.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Gundula's violin lessons are not just high quality tuition, they are first and foremost lots of fun. She has always kept me motivated, making me enjoy the learning process over the years without it ever feeling like a chore. This is through the choice of music as well as a structured, step by step approach. This has been very important to me as an adult learner.
Gundula leads me through a journey of small incremental steps where I make continuous improvements. She is also quite versatile with the piano and you don't have to look for any other accompanist for the grade exams.
She complements classical teaching methods with creative approaches, e.g. playing by ear which helps in recognising sound intervals. This supports an understanding and connecting to the music and as a result one's violin playing becomes more than just a mechanical process.
I certainly would recommend Gundula as a teacher to all who expect more from learning music than just reproducing notes.I have known Gundula Gruen for nearly four years, firstly as a conductor and performer in my orchestra and now, for the last year, as my violin, singing and piano teacher.
Finally, I have found a teacher who is both an experienced professional not only in classical violin, but other musical genres and a very warm, passionate and encouraging person.I feel very confident that I will continue to grow in the abovementioned skills with Gundula as a teacher. She has some outstanding strengths such as pace, energy, patience and attention to detail. In addition, she is the first teacher I have had who has taken an active interest in my all round musical development, activities and passion.
I can recommend her without hesitation.View more recommendations
