About MacKenzie

Hi, I’m MacKenzie! I have a Biomedical Engineering degree (WPI) and an MS in Prosthetics & Orthotics (University of Pittsburgh), and I work full-time as a certified orthotist/prosthetist—often with kids and their families. That daily experience has shaped how I tutor: patient, clear, and focused on helping students feel comfortable asking questions.

When I was in school, I regularly sought out tutors because I usually needed to hear things explained in a different way. Traditional lectures and PowerPoints never worked well for me, so I learned to succeed by breaking concepts down, talking them through, and practicing until they made sense. That perspective is a big part of my teaching style now. I’m very question-oriented, and I encourage students to be the same—because good questions are often the fastest path to real understanding.

I’m also a hands-on problem solver by nature. I like finding practical, creative ways to approach tough material, especially in math and science. Whether a student needs help with high school math (pre-algebra through pre-calc, plus intro calculus), biology, anatomy/physiology, or foundational physics, I focus on building both the skill and the confidence to handle the next problem independently.

Outside of work, I’m usually reading, catching up on my shows, or working on a craft project—so I truly enjoy the process of learning and making things. If you’re looking for a tutor who will take you seriously, meet you where you are, and explain things in a way that finally “clicks,” I’d love to help.

My lessons are centered on helping students truly understand the material (not just finish an assignment). Sessions are structured, but I tailor everything to the student’s class, pace, and learning style so we can adjust quickly if something isn’t clicking.

Teaching method and techniques:
I start by pinpointing the exact gap using a few targeted questions, then teach the concept with clear, step-by-step examples (“I do one, we do one, you do one”). I use visuals and simple frameworks, plus real-world examples from biomedical engineering/healthcare when helpful. I also build in memory-based strategies like active recall and spaced practice, and I can provide practical study/organization supports (checklists, one-page summaries, and test plans). I’m especially comfortable helping students who struggle with focus or overwhelm—I spent years developing effective learning strategies while compensating for undiagnosed ADHD.

Typical lesson plan:
We begin with a quick check-in and set a goal for the session. Next, we review current homework or recent mistakes to find patterns. I teach/re-teach the key concept, then we practice together and transition to the student working more independently with light coaching. We finish by summarizing the main takeaways and making a simple plan for what to practice next.

What sets me apart:
I work with kids daily in my professional role, so I’m patient, encouraging, and good at keeping sessions calm and productive. With a BME degree (WPI) and an MS in Prosthetics & Orthotics (Pitt), I can explain STEM topics clearly and connect them to real applications.

Who lessons are for:
Middle school, high school, and early college students—especially those who want stronger fundamentals, better study habits, or a confidence boost. I tutor high school math (pre-algebra through pre-calc and intro calc as needed) and science, including biology, anatomy/physiology, and basic physics/STEM coursework.
