I'm happy to share my 20 years of professional experience as a writer and editor with you. I will teach you how to write clear, engaging prose, beginning with focused research and creating a structured outline that sets you up for success with your writing projects.
I have helped hundreds of students learn the basics of writing and editing, and worked with business professionals across a range of industries to hone their writing skills and develop their personal voice.
We begin with an assessment of your background and current skills, then discuss your needs and come up with a plan to achieve your goals. I have a proven track record of helping students and professionals become competent writers.
I will teach you how to avoid common writing errors such as overusing adjectives and participles, as well as relying on the passive voice. I will make sure you understand how "showing" is more effective than "telling" by providing you with numerous examples of effective prose, and help you expand your vocabulary so you always have the right word at your fingertips.
I also offer tutoring in effective reading techniques, English (grammar and composition), literature, and linguistics.
I specialize in helping non-native English speakers become effective writers, and have helped dozens of doctoral students write and copyedit their dissertations.
I'm friendly and easygoing, and take pride in the success of my students.

I have known Clayton for many decades and have always admired his talent and abilities in linguistics. I have no doubt his tutoring abilities are equal to or superior to those of scholars at our most prestigious universities. -Andy Jansen
I first met Clay in Mrs. Ledbetter's second-grade classroom. We became good friends when we were in the same Cub Scout den, remained friends all the way through high school and college, and are still close friends today.
Clay has been a "bookworm" as long as I can remember. It seemed like he always had a book in his hand and another in his backpack. All that reading definitely paid off, as he grew up into one of those people who always knows just the right word for any occasion. I also remember he tried out for "Jeopardy" back in the 1990s. He passed the written test to qualify for the show but apparently wasn't photogenic enough to actually be a contestant.
Besides being one of the smartest people I know, Clay is a genuinely nice person and goes out of his way to help others and make sure everyone is comfortable in a social situation.
I know he worked in the translation industry for a long time, then became a freelance writer and tutor around 15 years ago. I know he's had a lot of clients over the years, and I remember he has worked with non-native English speakers a lot, helping them with tutoring and a variety of writing projects, including helping several grad students write/edit their PhD dissertations.
I highly recommend Clay as a writer, tutor, and person. I guarantee you will get your money's worth and more working with Clay.View more recommendations
