About Louie
I’m primarily a jazz drummer, graduated from Trinity Laban’s 4 year BMus jazz course. During my time at Trinity I studied with great teachers and players - James Maddren, Shane Forbes, Gene Calderazzo, and Asaf Sirkis.
In my lessons I generally like to begin with hand technique, and then move on to the kit and finish with recordings/books/independence/sight reading. For those who are serious about learning the instrument and committing to their practice - I have extensive knowledge of the rudiments and like to commit a lot of attention to making sure that you can play relaxed and fluidly. In terms of styles, I can teach a good grounding in rock, funk, Latin and jazz. These are generally the four main styles of music that permeate all the music in the industry today. I like to focus on truly mastering things instead of moving through lots of information very quickly. As far as playing professionally is concerned, this mastering of the basics is by far the most important aspect of drumming. This combination of good relaxed technique and solid foundation in these four different styles leaves a student to take the route they desire.
Also, for those of you that just want to have fun and play - that’s great too! The best way to improve is by both playing and devoting time and attention to good practice, but you can have all the fun in the world just playing. I like to get an idea of the intentions of the student - their musical preferences, their focus and practice time, and their aims, so I can tailor our lessons to their needs. I like to start lessons with technique. This will include hand technique, rudiments and drum books. Good hand technique is key in helping you play with relaxed and consistent feel. The next part of the lesson will focus on learning by ear (your favourite records, transcription etc) and/or sight reading and theory. I feel it’s essential to hear musical examples of all the technical things you are trying to learn on the drums.

Perfect! Louie is an absolutely fantastic and knowledgeable tutor. A skilled drummer, his love for percussion is infectious!
His lessons are personalised to your level and interests, and he is enthusiastic in supporting your learning to help you achieve your aims.
As a beginner, I was very nervous for my first lessons, but Louie made me feel completely comfortable and excited to learn. He is very patient, puts in extra effort to answer all my questions and never complains when I ask him to re-explain a technique... again.
