About Johnathan

I am a professionally certified P–12 visual arts educator with nearly a decade of classroom teaching experience. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a concentration in Glassblowing, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education, and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Art Education. I am also currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Art Education at Indiana University.

Since 2017, I have taught visual arts at the elementary and secondary levels, working with students across a wide range of ages, abilities, and artistic experience. My current work focuses on secondary visual arts and ceramics, where I develop curriculum and guide students through technical skill development, artistic investigation, and critique. I have also served as a guest lecturer at Dalton State University, providing arts integration instruction to preservice educators.

I take my responsibilities as an educator seriously and strive to provide thoughtful, individualized instruction that respects each student's goals and level of experience. Whether a student is just beginning to explore art or seeking to strengthen existing skills, I bring the same professional care, preparation, and commitment to meaningful learning that guide my classroom teaching.

My approach to teaching art begins with understanding each student's interests, goals, and current level of experience. I believe effective instruction balances structured guidance with opportunities for individual exploration. Whether a student is learning fundamental drawing techniques, exploring color theory through painting, or developing their own artistic ideas, I adapt instruction to support their specific needs and interests.

A typical lesson begins by identifying what the student wants to learn or improve. From there, I provide instruction and guided practice focused on relevant techniques, followed by opportunities for independent application and constructive feedback. I emphasize observation, experimentation, reflection, and sustained practice rather than simply completing projects as quickly as possible. As students develop their abilities, I gradually encourage greater independence and ownership of their artistic decisions.

I bring nearly a decade of classroom teaching experience, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, graduate degrees in Art Education, and professional P–12 teaching certification. My experience includes teaching drawing, foundational painting, ceramics, and other visual arts across elementary and secondary grade levels. I am particularly well suited to working with children, teenagers, beginners, and developing artists who want to strengthen their technical skills, build confidence, or explore their artistic interests. My goal is to help students make meaningful progress while developing a lasting appreciation for the creative process.
