About Gavin
Learn Kung Fu That Works in the Real World - Professional Violence & Aggression Trainer.
I’ve spent 20 years training in Southern Style, Shaolin Taijiquan, Wahnam Kung Fu, sport kickboxing and self-defence, specialising in hand to hand combat.
Today I work as a high-level violence and aggression trainer for one of the biggest employers in the UK. This isn’t theory - in my job I use my training in real situations with people who are violent and intend to cause harm. I’ve disarmed people carrying weapons, and I’ve trained teams to systematically and safely take down aggressors of any size. I’m fully trained in both 1-1 and 2-1 situations against any aggressor.
What I’ll teach you:
My Sifu, Mark Appleford (master in Kung Fu), taught me how to blend flow (Kung Fu) with broken rhythm (boxing) and I’ll pass that on to you. Alongside real-world self-defence, I teach traditional fundamentals through the 5 Animal system of Kung Fu, and I have competition sport karate experience.
Why train with me rather than a typical instructor?
Because I’m more than a martial artist. I train security professionals for real-world use, always within legislation and the law. Knowing how to use reasonable and proportionate force - legally and confidently - is just as important as the technique itself, and it’s built into everything I teach.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, want practical self-defence, or want to go deeper into Kung Fu and Self-defence, I’ll meet you at your level.

Lessons are practical, structured and tailored to you. Complete beginners are welcome — no fitness level or experience required. We’ll build from traditional fundamentals using the 5 Animal system of Kung Fu, then layer in real-world self-defence: footwork, distance management, blending flow with broken rhythm, and how to stay calm under pressure. Every self-defence technique I teach sits within the law — you’ll learn what reasonable and proportionate force actually means, so you can act confidently and legally if you ever need to. Whether your goal is fitness, confidence, traditional Kung Fu or practical self-defence, the first lesson is about understanding where you are and where you want to go.
